Leeds United backed to sign UEFA Super Cup winner

Leeds United are in pole position to complete one of the best signings of the January transfer window.

Daniel Farke has lead this battered and bruised team to within contention of promotion; Leeds have 29 points after 15 games so far. The club sits just two points behind Sheffield United and Sunderland. Even more remarkable is how the team have achieved this with two of their best players having played less than half of the league games.

Leeds have been without Ethan Ampadu, who picked up a serious knee injury in September. Daniel Farke also lost Illia Gruev a few weeks later. The club have been playing without their first choice midfield pairing so far. Patrick Bamford has also struggled this season, the 31-year old has not been fit enough and has played just 61 minutes this campaign.

Leeds could be set for massive reinforcements. The club have been linked with Manchester City midfielder James McAtee over the past few weeks, and it has been reported that the club have launched an official offer. Daniel Farke pushed for attacking midfield signings during the summer transfer window, but the club missed out on almost all their targets. Leeds were reportedly after Fabio Carvalho and Gus Hamer among other names. Carvalho eventually joined Brentford, while Hamer remained at Sheffield United.

McAtee could solve a lot of problems for Leeds United, who need depth in midfield and attack. Former Leeds man Carlton Palmer has backed the club to pull off a move for the England U21 star:

“Leeds United are looking at a loan move for James McAtee.

“McAtee is a fantastic player, he was on loan at Sheffield United last season and the season before, and he was outstanding in midfield.

“Of course, Man City would prefer a Premier League move but he needs to be playing regular football. Leeds, in the position they are, they’re going to be pushing for automatic promotion, what he needs is to be playing regularly.”

McAtee showed his versatility on loan at Sheffield United two seasons ago where he filled roles in midfield, behind the striker and alongside the number nine. He could offer the same at Leeds United.

“Leeds are sweating on the fitness of midfield players, they may get them back in January, they may not, unfortunately. So they’ve got to move for some quality, and he is proven quality. He helped Sheffield United get promoted, he was outstanding, and even though they struggled in the Premier League, he was outstanding again.

“He’s a fantastic midfield player and it would be a coup for Leeds if they managed to get him and he can replicate the form he showed at Sheffield United, which I have no doubt he would do because he’s an outstanding footballer.”

Leeds’ first game after this international break is against Swansea City this weekend.
