Leeds United return to Elland Road on Sunday for one of their biggest fixtures so far this season, with Manchester United visiting in a rivalry that rarely needs extra motivation.

Daniel Farke’s side will be eager to respond after their narrow 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, where James Justin’s goal was not enough to earn a point. There were positives to take from the performance, but Leeds know they need to be more clinical to turn competitive displays into results against the Premier League’s bigger sides.

Manchester United, meanwhile, arrive with plenty of questions to answer after a frustrating start to the campaign. Their recent struggles, on and off the pitch, will encourage Leeds, but Farke will know better than to assume the visitors can be beaten simply because they lack confidence.

With Elland Road expected to provide a typically hostile atmosphere, Leeds have a real opportunity to make a statement. Three points would mean far more than just another win in the table.

Steven Gerrard tells Man United what they need to do at Leeds

Lisandro Martinez added fuel to the fire by criticising Jason Wilcox and the rest of the Manchester United hierarchy after their defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Steven Gerrard has insisted Michael Carrick needs a win at Leeds to ease the pressure and should deal firmly with Martinez’s outburst.

He believes a win on Sunday will change everything for Carrick and Manchester United, as it would be a statement win against one of the Premier League’s in-form sides.

“I think he needs to win against Leeds massively because the heat is going to get hotter”, Gerrard said on The Overlap.

“He needs to deal with his situation, either by speaking to the press or by issuing a statement.

“But the club and Michael really need to set an example with this type of communication.

“Focus on the next game, as there is no point for Michael Carrick to worry about four or five fixtures down the line.

“If he goes and beats Leeds, then it changes things.”

The Whites must not miss this chance to beat Man United

Leeds cannot afford to let Manchester United escape with a result at Elland Road on Sunday. Their bitter rivals have given supporters plenty of reasons to doubt them this season, and Daniel Farke’s side have a genuine opportunity to turn that uncertainty into three valuable points.

The Red Devils have struggled for consistency, dropped points from winning positions and looked vulnerable when opponents have put them under pressure. Leeds must do exactly that from the first whistle, rather than letting the visitors settle into the game.

The Whites showed against Arsenal that they can compete with top opposition, but another encouraging performance without a result will count for little. They need to be ruthless in front of goal, stay switched on defensively and punish Manchester United when chances arrive.

Elland Road will demand nothing less. Beating Manchester United would mean more than bragging rights, and Leeds cannot afford to let this opportunity pass them by. They must make their rivals pay.
