Leeds United are on the cusp of Premier League survival after their 3-0 win over Wolves, and even Wayne Rooney and Danny Murphy have taken note.

Six points from their last two league games have put Leeds in a brilliant position to secure Premier League safety going into the final five games of the season.

They have an eight-point cushion over the relegation zone, and may be one win away from guaranteeing one more season of Premier League football at Elland Road.

While Nottingham Forest also scored a big win this weekend, it’s Tottenham who are now in real trouble and serious favourites to do the unthinkable – get relegated from the Premier League.

Sunday night’s Match of the Day had Wayne Rooney and Danny Murphy as the pundits, and the duo engaged in a conversation around the relegation race.

Rooney believes Tottenham are going to go down to the Championship this season, given how results are shaping up at this stage of the season.

Danny Murphy has insisted Leeds and Nottingham Forest may have done enough to be safe and feels it’s now between West Ham and Tottenham for the final relegation spot.

Rooney said, “Tottenham are in it, they’ve got a really tough set of fixtures, obviously West Ham have got the game in hand, if they win that, it’ll be difficult for Tottenham, I think they’re going to go.”

Murphy added: “It’s starting to feel that way, [Leeds and Forest being safe, and it’s now between West Ham and Spurs].

“Tomorrow’s [tonight] a huge one for West Ham because if they can win, all of a sudden, the gap gets bigger and the pressure on Tottenham becomes enormous.

“The Wolves game is a must-win for Tottenham.”

Tottenham now need Leeds to secure safety soon

Daniel Farke’s Leeds look just about safe now and are probably one win away from making it mathematically certain.

If they can get that result in the next couple of games and then beat Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final next Sunday, their priorities could shift by the time they head to Tottenham next month.

📅 Leeds United: The Final Five
DATE FIXTURE VENUE
Apr 22 Bournemouth vs Leeds 🏟️ Vitality Stadium
May 01 Leeds vs Burnley 🏟️ Elland Road
May 11 Tottenham vs Leeds 🏟️ Spurs Stadium
May 17 Leeds vs Brighton 🏟️ Elland Road
May 24 West Ham vs Leeds 🏟️ London Stadium

That’s exactly what Spurs will be hoping for: that Leeds are already secure and have an FA Cup final on the horizon, because it might lead to Farke rotating his side for that fixture.

Leeds face Burnley at home before that trip to north London, and a win there should seal their survival.

By the time they meet Spurs, Leeds could be completely out of reach, which might suit Tottenham just fine if it means their opponents are relaxed and slightly distracted by a possible FA Cup final appearance.
