£216m transfer budget revealed as Leeds United’s new rivals flex financial muscle

Leeds United did well to finish 14th in their first season back in the Premier League. However, they are now facing the challenge of improving the squad under a tight budget.

The club’s freedom to spend more has been curtailed under the Premier League’s new Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) rules, and they will have to be more careful this summer.

Leeds are looking to make upgrades and have done significant work to sign at least one marquee player, with the club now closing in on a record signing this summer.

However, the challenge next season is going to be tougher, and a newly promoted team have revealed a budget that will send shivers down the spine of executives at Elland Road.

Leeds on notice after Hull City reveal transfer budget

Hull City beat Middlesbrough in the final of the playoff final to book their tickets to the Premier League for the 2026/27 season.

Leeds and Sunderland showed last season that good recruitment and smart decisions make it possible for newly promoted teams to compete in the top flight.

Hull need to sell players before the end of this month to avoid starting the Premier League with a points deduction. However, owner Acun Ilicali won’t die wondering.

The Tigers chairman has claimed that Hill will have a budget well beyond the £200m mark for the upcoming summer transfer window.

He told Turkish outlet Buzzsport: “We have a transfer budget of £216m.”

It seems Hull are prepared to fork out big money to overhaul the entire squad and build a completely new team for the Premier League challenge.

Sunderland did something similar last summer and reaped the rewards by qualifying for the Europa League.

The 49ers need to step up

The noises coming out of Leeds suggest that they are only looking to make a handful of signings to improve the overall level of the squad.

Leeds do not believe that they need a squad overhaul like last summer, and they are probably right. However, they cannot afford to stand still.

Established Premier League teams will spend money, and Hull have already announced that they are going to lavishly fork out cash to improve their chances of survival.

If Leeds think that they can get away with spending less money this summer, they are in for a tough reality check next season.

The 49ers must step up to ensure that Leeds are now fighting for survival towards the end of the 2026/27 campaign.
