Tottenham supporters were left furious after their side failed to get the result they wanted at Elland Road, with a controversial first-half decision becoming one of the afternoon’s biggest talking points.

The visitors wanted stronger action from the officials following a challenge that left one of their attacking players requiring treatment. VAR took a lengthy look at the incident but ultimately backed the referee’s decision, leaving Spurs players and supporters frustrated.

However, Roberto De Zerbi offered a measured response to the controversy, refusing to turn his post-match assessment into criticism of the officials.

De Zerbi gives verdict on Bogle’s challenge

The incident involved Jayden Bogle and Mathys Tel in the 34th minute. Tottenham wanted the Leeds defender sent off, but the referee decided against showing a red card after consulting VAR.

The Premier League later confirmed the decision had been checked and upheld, with VAR describing it as a reckless challenge rather than one warranting dismissal.

Asked about the incident after the game, De Zerbi initially admitted he had not seen it clearly.

“In the first situation of Mathys Tel, I didn’t see; I can’t say anything”, the Tottenham manager said.

When pressed further, however, the Italian made it clear that he was not interested in publicly questioning the officials.

Spurs boss backs officials despite controversy

“I have big confidence in the referee”, De Zerbi added.

“Nothing changes if he watches the clip or not. There was VAR, and if they didn’t make the right decision, I don’t know. We have confidence.

“We have to keep eyes on the performances and where we can improve.”

His comments may surprise some Tottenham supporters, particularly given the anger surrounding the decision during the match.

Former Spurs forward Jamie O’Hara was far less restrained while covering the game on talkSPORT, branding the decision a disgrace and describing it as the worst he had ever seen.

De Zerbi, however, chose not to join the criticism. Rather than prolong the debate over the officials, he turned his attention towards his own team’s performance.

That will not necessarily satisfy supporters who felt Bogle should have been sent off, but the Tottenham manager has made his position clear. He is backing the officials and wants his players to focus on what went wrong on the pitch.

Leeds, meanwhile, took full advantage, with Noah Okafor coming off the bench to score the winner in the 79th minute and secure a valuable 1-0 victory.
