Leeds United are closing in on a place in next season’s Premier League after beating Burnley 3–1 at Elland Road on Friday night.

Anton Stach gave the hosts the lead in the first half with a superb long-range effort, putting them in control early on.

In the second half, Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin added to the tally to secure all three points, with Burnley only managing a late consolation goal.

Ethan Ampadu has really enjoyed the win over Burnley and what it did to the prospect of Leeds surviving in the Premier League at the end of the season.

Relegated Burnley get a goodbye jibe from Ethan Ampadu

Leeds went into this game without a win in three against Burnley, and it really seems to have irked Ethan Ampadu before the game.

Ampadu brought that up after the win tonight and conceded that he enjoyed getting revenge on Burnley after struggling to beat them recently.

He is still not celebrating Premier League survival. However, the Leeds captain feels they are now in a good position with three games left in the season.

Ampadu said on Sky Sports: “Personally, for us over the last couple of years, we have not managed to beat Burnley, and we wanted to get revenge tonight – that was the main thing.

“We wanted to get to 43 points tonight. We can’t say how many points are going to be needed in the end, but we still have three massive games left, and we’ll give everything.

“We have put ourselves in a strong position, and for tonight we are going to enjoy it, and we’re going to enjoy the weekend.

“After last week, we wanted to bounce back and give the fans something to cheer. We have three games left, and hopefully we’ll have three more good results.”

The Whites can afford to relax

Leeds United go into the weekend sitting 14th on 43 points, and while there’s still a slim mathematical chance they could be relegated, it’s highly unlikely.

Historically, no team has gone down from a 38-game Premier League season with 43 points, and there’s little to suggest that record will change this time around.

For Leeds to drop into the Championship, it would require an extreme run of results elsewhere, combined with them losing all three of their remaining matches.

Realistically, it’s now safe to say Leeds will still be a Premier League side when the 2026/27 season gets underway in August.
