In 2015, the young midfielder arrived at Elland Road, where he spent a year playing with the academy before making his transition to the first team.

He spoke about life in West Yorkshire and how he had to adapt to his environment as well as playing in England for the first time.

“Today I speak five languages. Living in different environments and cultures helped me grow and even helped me when I went to Italy alone at twenty.” he said speaking to Gianluca Di Marzio.

“I was a normal boy who wanted to play football and was waiting for his opportunity . When I joined the academy, I knew I had to work twice as hard as everyone else. After a year, I managed to make my debut with the first team: I only played seven minutes, but playing in front of that packed stadium was incredible.”

Vieira left the club in 2018, when Sampdoria reportedly paid over £7 million for him after he impressed during his three-year spell. The midfielder spoke about the move and his emotions when it happened.

“I was scared and sad, because I felt part of the project. I left the stadium with my family, got in the car, and went for a drive alone to think.”

“My agent explained to me that I wasn’t obligated to accept. I thought about it and said, ‘If it helps Leeds, I’ll do it.’ I was going to Serie A, to a big team. Two days later, I was in Genoa.”

Whites can afford to keep their best stars now

Back then, Leeds United had some financial troubles and outside that, the lacked the pedigree of a ”bigger” side.

This meant that the almost always had to sell their best players when clubs came knocking. Vieira was an example; he was an exciting young midfielder that impressed during his short spell at Elland Road.

If Leeds were in a better place financially, the could have kept him and built a team around him.

The club have been really fortunate to get ownership that have a long-term project and the ambition to match it. Now, the Whites do not have to worry about teams plucking their best stars.
