Daniel Farke has won over the Leeds United fans this season by turning their side into one of the most formidable teams in the Championship’s recent history. He is unlikely to ever attain the cult status that Marcelo Bielsa still enjoys at Elland Road but if his team get the job done at the end of the season, he would be fondly remembered by the supporters no matter what happens in the Premier League. However, one of his predecessors remains one of the most controversial managers in the club’s history and he could soon be seen at Elland Road but in the opposition dugout.
Leeds’ relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 season remains a painful reminder of what could happen if poor decisions are made at the boardroom level.
The club are still untying the strings of the poor recruitment Victor Orta carried out towards the end of his time as the Leeds’ director of football and the current owners have had to carry the financial can from those times.
However, Leeds also made some poor decisions at the managerial level, which ultimately contributed to the general chaos at Elland Road towards the end of their three-year stint back in the Premier League.
The decision to sack Bielsa in early 2022 was not popular but Leeds exacerbated the situation by bringing in Jesse Marsch as his replacement.
The American managed to keep Leeds in the top flight in that year but next season, it was clear that he was clearly not good enough and the club ultimately paid for the board’s mistake through relegation.
Jesse Marsch could soon bring a team to Leeds United
Marsch is in charge of the Canadian national team but Leeds could soon see him in the dugout at Elland Road as soon as next month.
According to Wales Online, the American is one of the names Swansea are considering as they look to bring in a new manager.
Swansea sacked Luke Williams at the start of the week and are now in the market for a new manager as they look to survive in the Championship this season.
Marsch is one of the names Swansea are considering and his experience in English football could be one of the reason the club are looking at him.
Swansea sit 17th in the Championship, eight points of the relegation zone but a sustained run of poor form cost Williams his job at the Liberty Stadium.
The Welsh side are scheduled to face Leeds at Elland Road next month and the sight of March in the opposition dugout is now a real possibility.
Leeds United fans will remember him but not fondly
Marsch remains a deeply unpopular figure at Leeds following the role he played in getting the club relegated from the Premier League in 2023.
Poor recruitment didn’t help him but the American looked a fish out of water in the Premier League and his team lacked the energy and effervescence of his predecessor’s side.
He was always up against it as he replaced Bielsa, considered one of the greatest managers in the club’s history, and was never going to win a popularity contest.
Can you name the Leeds game these 10 goal celebrations are from?
But his baffling decisions and poor style of football meant, Leeds fans never got the opportunity to admire him and he was gone but it was too late by then
It remains to be seen what kind of reception he receives if he becomes the next Swansea boss and brings his new team to Elland Road next month.
However, Marsch will certainly remain an infamous figure for Leeds fans – he replaced a Whites legend in Bielsa and played a big part in ensuring the side dropped back into the Championship after just three years in the Premier League.
