Leeds United and Manchester United played out a good old-fashioned 1-1 draw at Elland Road today, after much of the build-up focused on the visitors’ pre-game troubles.
After decades, Leeds went into this fixture as favourites, and some outrageous predictions followed, including Chris Sutton predicting a 5-0 home win.
However, both teams dug deep, fought hard, and played out a pulsating 1-1 draw with everything this bitter rivalry deserves, including crunching tackles and red-card calls.
While it didn’t make for a great game of football, Jamie Carragher insisted it was enough of a spectacle for everyone, including neutrals like him.

Jamie Carragher’s surprise verdict

The former Liverpool defender conceded the game lacked quality, but he enjoyed both teams’ old-school style, which produced an enthralling spectacle for Elland Road.
He believes Manchester United collapsed after conceding the equaliser and feels they could have won at the end.
“You know what, the game lacked quality today, but I absolutely loved it”, Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“It was a throwback today. It was like watching a Premier League game from the nineties.
“There was a lot of energy from both teams; there were tackles and challenges flying in, balls in the box, and the crowd really getting involved as well.
“There was a stage in the second half where I think Manchester United could have gone under, when it went 1-1.
“But then maybe towards the end of the game it looked like Man Utd were perhaps more likely to get the winning goal, but I really enjoyed the game.”

Carragher is right

The 1-1 draw between Leeds United and Manchester United at Elland Road reminded us that football doesn’t need to be pretty to be compelling. Quality in possession was often lacking, the final ball frequently went astray, and neither side consistently made the most of promising situations.
Yet it was a terrific spectacle.
Intensity defined every challenge, urgency every attack, and a palpable sense that neither side could afford to lose this one. The history between these clubs added another layer, with the crowd making sure every tackle and misplaced pass mattered.
It was messy, frantic and occasionally frustrating, but that was part of the appeal. Neither team gave the other room to breathe, and the contest never felt settled. Sometimes, a rivalry’s drama matters more than technical perfection.
