Leeds United will need to be at their best when Manchester United visit Elland Road, with Michael Carrick’s side possessing enough quality to punish the home side despite the visitors’ recent struggles.

The atmosphere should be electric for one of English football’s fiercest rivalries, and Daniel Farke will know his players cannot afford to be distracted by Manchester United’s recent struggles.

Leeds must be aggressive, disciplined, and clinical to make the most of home advantage.

However, the hosts may have reason to feel a little more optimistic about one of their opponents’ biggest threats. In the build-up to Sunday’s showdown, Carrick has offered an update that could be significant for Leeds, particularly in how they approach the visitors’ midfield.

Carrick reveals fresh concern over Bruno Fernandes

At his pre-match press conference, Carrick confirmed Bruno Fernandes had been carrying an issue but suggested the Manchester United captain was close to putting it behind him.

“Yeah, he [Fernandes] was [carrying an injury]. Like I said the other day, he had been carrying some sort of issue”, he said.

“A lot of players do carry them, and it kind of goes under the radar, and people just sometimes think everyone is 100 per cent fully fit, and it’s probably not very often the case.

“But yeah, he has been carrying a bit of an issue, but he’s pretty much over that now, to be honest, and he’ll be back to his best.”

Carrick’s comments don’t confirm that Fernandes will be unfit for the trip to Elland Road. In fact, the Manchester United boss sounded optimistic about his recovery. But the admission that the midfielder has been managing a problem is still worth noting ahead of such an important fixture.

Leeds could benefit if Fernandes is not at full strength

Fernandes remains Manchester United’s most influential player, capable of creating chances with a single pass and making things happen when opponents think they have the game under control. His movement, vision and ability to find space between the lines make him particularly difficult to contain.

If he is not quite at full fitness, however, Leeds could make his afternoon more uncomfortable. Farke’s side will need to close down his passing options, deny him time on the ball and prevent him from dictating the tempo in dangerous areas.

That does not mean Leeds can afford to focus solely on Fernandes. Manchester United have other players who can hurt them, and an injury issue does not necessarily mean the Portuguese midfielder will be less effective. Carrick clearly expects him to return to his best.

Still, there is a difference between being available and being completely comfortable. If Fernandes is carrying any lingering discomfort, Leeds will hope their intensity tests him physically and limits his influence on the game.

For the home side, the priority remains executing their own plan rather than relying on an opponent’s fitness concerns. But if Fernandes is anything less than his best, Leeds may find it easier to disrupt Manchester United’s attacking rhythm at Elland Road.
