Going into next season, Leeds United have to do better in the transfer market than they did last year. Back in 2020, the club was complacent and failed to improve Marcelo Bielsa’s side that survived relegation.
That summer started the decline of the team, before a lot of things happened and the Whites were relegated in 2023.
Things are much better now compared to then, but that summer will serve as a warning for the ownership. Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe has already ensured fans that the team will spend.
Outside the usual transfer target in every window, the club could look in the direction of free agents once again.
Leeds have benefited from some free agent signings over the years, from Sam Byram to recently Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha.
Leeds United remain frontrunners for star free agent
Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin were a big part of Leeds United surviving relegation this past season. There is a lot of value in finding players to join your club for free without a transfer fee.
And per reports, the Whites could do that again this summer. After missing out on Harry Wilson last year, Leeds will be back in for the midfielder this summer.
He is out of contract later this month, but Fulham have announced that they have offered him a new deal to stay.
During the season, he was heavily linked with a move away after a campaign with 11 goals and eight assists.
Per Football Insider, despite Fulham’s contract offer on the table, Leeds remain front runners to sign the midfielder. Aston Villa have recently been linked with a move for the Welsh international.
This week, former Premier League boss Gordon Strachan believes a move to Elland Road would be a good fit for Wilson. He also said the midfielder can guarantee ’10 goals a season’.

49ers need to complete this signing
Leeds have already seen the success Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin brought after signing as free agents last year. And if the club want to continue being ambitious, Harry Wilson should be their summer signing.
He would improve the team greatly; as he can play in midfield and attacking roles.
Daniel Farke has been crying out for a playmaker, something Wilson has shown he can do – the Fulham man is also great at taking set pieces.
Everything about the midfielder shows that he would be an improvement on current options, and if Paraag Marathe is to stay true to his word, Wilson should be a Leeds player this summer.
