All of the newly promoted Premier League sides next season will have Leeds United and Sunderland to look up to. The two clubs managed to break the trend and stay up in the top flight.

It was a regular occurrence for all three teams from the Championship to go back down, but last season was different.

Leeds and Sunderland defied the odds in different ways. Regis Le Bris’ side got off to a hot start very early in the season where they capitalized on their strong home form to rack up the points.

They got enough to avoid relegation, and a strong run to end the season saw them qualify for Europe.

Leeds on the other hand, took some time to adapt to the Premier League. It was in the middle of the season that the Whites that they turned things around to end up finishing in 14th.

Leeds United’s Premier League rivals could face points deduction next season

Next season will see Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City in the Premier League.

Coventry and Ipswich secured automatic promotion, while Hull had to go through the Championship play-offs. Ahead of the season, Ipswich have already lost their coach as Keiran McKenna resigned.

And now, Hull City could face troubles of their own with this latest update.

Per BBC Sport, the club have an overspend of around £6 million on their profit and sustainability (PSR) calculation. This could lead to a six-point deduction next season under EFL rules.

This means the club will have to balance the books in the coming months to avoid the penalty.

What happens to Joe Gelhardt deal?

Leeds United loaned Joe Gelhardt to Hull City last season after the forward impressed on a short spell the previous campaign.

He continued to deliver for the Tigers this year as he scored 15 goals and had five assists in the Championship. Gelhardt will return to Elland Road this summer, waiting for his next step.

During the season, figures at Hull expressed interest in signing the 24-year old on a permanent deal.

Despite the £200 million boost the club received after winning the playoffs, they will still have to balance their books. This likely means that Hull will have to make some transfers before they try to sign Gelhardt.

Which means a move for the Leeds star will not be their priority at the start of the summer window.
