Leeds United have moved up to fourth in the Premier League table following their 4-1 win over Newcastle United at Elland Road on Monday night.

Daniel Farke’s side produced a masterclass under the lights as they swatted aside Newcastle in a scintillating performance that surprised many observers.

Leeds ran away with the game in the first half itself after scoring three before the break. Noah Okafor scored a fourth at the hour mark, and Daniel Farke admitted that he was unhappy to see his team concede at the end.

Michael Owen was left hugely impressed with what he saw from Leeds at Elland Road on Monday night, but feels Manchester United should have gambled on signing one of the players in Farke’s squad.

The former striker insists Man United should have snapped up Leeds star

Michael Owen has insisted that when Dominic Calvert-Lewin is fit and firing, it is hard to find a centre-forward of his quality in the Premier League.

He stressed that one of the bigger teams, such as Manchester United, should have gambled on signing the striker when he left Everton on a free transfer.

The former striker credited Leeds for not only taking the chance on the ex-Evertonian but also finding a way to keep him fit and healthy for most games, which he has never done in his career.

Owen said on Premier League Productions: “He has always struggled with injuries, but when he is fit, he is a hard man to handle.

“And with the lack of centre-forwards that has been around in recent years, I thought one of the bigger teams might have just taken a chance and had him as the backup.

“Maybe even a Manchester United.

“One or two sniffed around him, but Leeds put the money where their mouth was and got him, and he has repaid them.

“They must be doing something to keep him fit, and he is playing virtually every game, and he has never done it.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was not a popular signing at Leeds

Calvert-Lewin has become a fan favourite at Leeds over the last year, but it is easy to forget now that at the time of his arrival it was not a popular move.

Leeds supporters expected the club to spend big on a striker. However, the recruitment team took a punt on Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer.

Fans lambasted the move as they felt that the club went for the cheap option and were worried about his injury record at Everton in the last few seasons.

The striker has overcome all those doubters and has been delivering the goods up front consistently for Leeds while remaining fit.

But let’s not rewrite history and acknowledge that the fans were too early to criticise the recruitment team when they signed Calvert-Lewin.
