Leeds United snatched a point away against Bournemouth last night, thanks to a 97th-minute equaliser from substitute Sean Longstaff.
Understandably, the Whites were not at their best during the clash in midweek and were under the cosh throughout the majority of the game.
But the fact that they were still able to walk away with a point shows how resolute this Leeds side is under Daniel Farke, and this team spirit that they possess is a large reason they will likely still be in the Premier League next season.
Following the game, a Sky Sports pundit waxed lyrical about United and the impact they have had since their return to the top flight.
Alan Smith raves about Leeds following their draw against Bournemouth
Following their recent back-to-back victories over Manchester United and Wolves, most fans and pundits acknowledged that Leeds had likely secured their Premier League status for next season.
But with that draw against Bournemouth taking Leeds to that all-important 40-point mark, it would take a monumental turnaround from here to see the Whites relegated.
Following the game last night, former Arsenal man Smith said that United’s latest result should be enough to ensure their safety.
Whilst on commentary for Sky Sports, Smith said, “Yeah, I think so (Leeds will stay up), definitely.”
The former England international was also full of praise for Leeds and the impact they have had on the Premier League this season.
“They’ve been an addition to this Premier League, they really have. Some really exciting stuff from them in the second half of the season, so in terms of the Premier League, it will be good to keep them there next season. They’re a big club with big support.”
Data suggests Leeds were fortunate to pick up a draw against Bournemouth
Karl Darlow was forced to be at his best, with the Welshman making a couple of crucial saves to keep Leeds in the game at times.
In total, Darlow made five saves during the game, with three of those saves coming from inside the box.
- Bournemouth had an xG of 1.65, whilst Leeds’ xG was only 0.81
- Bournemouth had four big chances during the game, whilst Leeds only had one
- The hosts had 12 corner kicks whilst Farke’s men had just the one (Sofascore)
Luckily for Leeds, Darlow and his backline managed to absorb most of this pressure and keep the game tight to ensure Longstaff’s immense piece of quality at the death earned them a satisfying point on the road.
