£11M Leeds United man suffers setback, will not play for club until next year

Max Wober Leeds United

This summer gave Daniel Farke the perfect opportunity to shape this Leeds United team ahead of their return to the Premier League. The club backed him in the summer window, bringing in over £100 million worth of talent.

Leeds looked to be covered in all the areas they lacked depth in last season; new defenders, two experience midfielders and some decent forward options. The club also allowed some players to leave after they barely featured in the last campaign.

Defender Max Wober was one of the first out of the door in the summer, joining Werder Bremen in Germany. Isaac Schmidt, Largie Ramazani and Mateo Joseph were among the other players who also left on temporary deals.

Leeds United loanee Max Wober suffers another injury setback

Wober’s case at Elland Road was interesting; earlier this year he publicly revealed that Leeds had told him to find a new club. Last season, he barely played for the first team. Reports suggested that he had problems with Daniel Farke in 2023 and the pair have not seen eye-to-eye since.

The Austrian joined Bremen and trained with them in pre-season, however in his first competitive appearance, he suffered an injury. His new club confirmed it was a hamstring injury and gave him a timeline of six to eight weeks. Now, in November, the defender has not been seen in training or on the pitch.

2023/24 (on loan) 27

2025/26 (so far) 1

Werder Bremen official Peter Niemeyer has now come out and confirmed that Wober has been ruled out for the rest of this year. He was speaking to Deich Stube:

“There’s no question of a setback. The healing process is simply taking a little longer.

“He’s putting his situation into perspective and showing the necessary patience.

“Throughout his injury, he’s stayed close to the team, which is good for him and the group. As a positive person, he contributes a lot.”

Injury woes could scupper any potential transfer

Max Wober is a good player and was decent at Leeds United, but his injury issues have become a problem. And now that his loan club have seen these issues first hand, it will make it difficult for the Whites to get a transfer fee for him.

Season Games Missed Due to Injury
2022/23 7
2023/24 (on loan) 10
2024/25 23
2025/26 (so far) 10

The season started months ago and the defender has made just one appearance, and now the next time he will play will be in 2026. Unless there is a miracle, Bremen might opt out of signing the Austrian on a permanent deal after his loan ends. Wober’s contract expires in 2027, so Leeds will be desperate to get him off their books in the next few months.
