49ers must avoid costly Leeds United contract mistake that could haunt them for years

Leeds United are scrambling in the last few days after some players’ contracts expired. Daniel Farke’s men could be going into next season without a key player like Karl Darlow.

The veteran is now a free agent, but does have a contract offer on the table.

Nothing has been confirmed, but he does have interest from Manchester United and Everton. It would be difficult to see him back at Elland Road, considering both clubs could offer him higher wages.

Alex Cairns has verbally agreed to stay next season after his deal expired.

Sam Byram is one who has been linked with a move away this week. Reports suggest he might be on the way to Norwich City, his former club in the Championship.

Leeds United must not make costly mistake

If the list of players out of contract this summer was concerning, next year could be worrying for Leeds United.

The club quickly tied club captain Ethan Ampadu down to a new deal after the end of this past season. Club chairman Paraag Marathe revealed that it was a priority for everyone involved.

2027 could see Brenden Aaronson, Ilia Gruev, Ao Tanaka and Max Wober all leave the club.

So fans should expect that one or two will enter talks before the end of the year. But one player should not be on the list for the 49ers.

Brenden Aaronson continues to be a constant in this Leeds United team. He arrived as a big money signing years ago, but has since failed to hit the heights at Elland Road.

With one year left on his deal, the only option should be an exit.

Leeds as a team have grown beyond needing him to always be involved in the first team, and him playing next season is not ideal.

49ers need to cash in this summer

Daniel Farke may be reluctant to bench the midfielder, but the 49ers should definitely make the call to sell him.

Cashing in this summer might be the only way to recoup some of the £25 million outlay from years ago. Continuing to play him even next season could be disastrous.

His value is not that high, and his numbers will not be attractive to any suitors.

With one year left on his deal, trying to get a decent fee should be the only option for the club. Making a big mistake like they did with Illan Meslier leaving for free should not be repeated.
