£17.5m Leeds gamble in crisis as early hype spectacularly backfires

Leeds United managed only a 0-0 draw at Sunderland on Sunday, and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin failing to score, the other attackers again flattered to deceive.

Daniel Farke must be worried that his other attackers aren’t stepping up when Calvert-Lewin isn’t on the scoresheet, and five draws in eight league games show that chance creation and scoring are major problems.

The panic after Calvert-Lewin’s injury scare ahead of the Sunderland trip highlighted Leeds’ lack of options and genuine goalscorers.

Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips highlighted the issue after Sunday’s stalemate at the Stadium of Light, but one player is now seriously struggling to justify his billing.

The Harry Wilson hype has disappeared

Leeds’ summer signing of Harry Wilson on a free transfer was seen as a coup after his stellar last season at Fulham.

He scored 11 goals and registered eight assists in all competitions last season, and became one of the summer’s most sought-after free agents.

Leeds wanted him last year, and finally got their man. Daniel Farke believed that he added a proven Premier League performer with experience and goalscoring pedigree.

However, the Welshman has yet to cement his place, and he only made his second league start on Sunday in the 0-0 draw against Sunderland.

Farke replaced him after 66 minutes following another ineffective performance, as he failed to make any meaningful impact in the final third.

The conditions at the Stadium of Light were difficult, and it would be hard to judge Wilson on a bad performance against Sunderland this weekend.

However, Wilson hasn’t done enough to become a regular in Leeds’ starting eleven, and Farke hasn’t consistently backed him.

The hype around him has faded and backfired, as the winger is now struggling to live up to his billing.

Wilson signed a four-year contract worth £17.5m, and so far he hasn’t proven he deserves it.

He can still prove everyone wrong, but he is running out of time

Harry Wilson still has time to prove himself at Leeds, but he needs to start making his presence felt soon. The summer signing arrived with the pedigree and experience to add another dimension to Daniel Farke’s attack, yet Leeds are still waiting for him to deliver consistently.

There is no reason to write him off after a difficult start. New signings need time to settle, understand their teammates and find their rhythm in a different system.

Wilson has the technical quality and attacking instincts to make a difference, particularly if he is given the freedom to influence games in the final third.

However, patience has its limits. Leeds need goals, assists and moments of quality from players beyond Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Wilson must start turning promising positions into tangible contributions.

His chance to become an important figure at Elland Road remains, but he needs to seize it before doubts grow.

Conditions were ridiculous but Wilson and Aaronson lost the ball more times than I could count because they do not have the stature of grown men. Wilson would be better on the wing in his natural position, Aaronson seems a lost cause.
