BBC journalist confirms major Leeds United development as key decision nears: “It will happen”

Leeds United are focused on preparing for a big Premier League game under the lights on Monday when they host Newcastle United at Elland Road.

The Whites are unbeaten in the Premier League after three games and will hope to keep that run going against a Newcastle side who have a good recent record against Leeds.

However, plenty is happening behind the scenes at Leeds, and managing director Robbie Evans provided updates on a wide range of issues surrounding the club last week.

He explained the reasons behind Leeds deciding against signing a striker, but more importantly, Evans provided an official update on an issue the club have been working on for months.

Adam Pope has provided his own update on major Leeds news

Evans confirmed that Leeds have been negotiating with Farke over a new contract for several months, although he admitted that the two sides have yet to reach an agreement.

However, the Leeds MD appeared relaxed about the situation, suggesting that both sides remain keen to reach an agreement and get the deal over the line in the coming months.

BBC Leeds reporter Adam Pope has insisted that he has always felt confident that Farke will sign a new contract and commit his future to Elland Road.

He is feeling even more bullish after what he heard from the Leeds managing director and believes an agreement is now close between the two sides.

Speaking on Don’t Go to Bed Just Yet, Pope said, “I’ve always felt confident and hearing what Robbie said made me feel more confident that they’re aligned.

“He’s really cool about it. It’s about getting it right. They must be pretty close, I would imagine. I think it’ll happen.”

Stability under Farke is a key reason behind Leeds United’s success

The 49ers have shown plenty of faith in Daniel Farke over the past three years, even when the pressure around the Leeds United manager was reaching uncomfortable levels. There have been several moments when outside calls for his dismissal could easily have influenced the club, but the owners chose to back their man.

They stood by Farke after Leeds suffered defeat in the 2024 play-off final, and they did the same a year later when the Whites returned to the Premier League. Despite questions over his previous record in the top flight and calls for a change in the dugout, the club resisted the noise.

The pressure reached another level around October and November last year when Leeds were struggling for results, and Farke appeared to be on the brink. Once again, the owners refused to panic. That stability has since proved hugely valuable, with Leeds’ progress during the second half of last season showing the benefits of sticking with the manager.

With that in mind, handing Farke a new three-year contract would make perfect sense. In a league where managers can quickly find themselves under pressure after just 12 to 18 months, Leeds have an opportunity to secure some much-needed continuity.
