Leeds United stunned the Premier League on Wednesday night by pulling off a result many thought they were not capable of. The Whites recorded a huge home win over Chelsea who were in the top four before the match kicked off.
It seemed like nothing was going well at Leeds these past few weeks – Daniel Farke was under pressure, and the team had lost four games in a row. Before Wednesday night, no one really gave them a chance.
| Opponent | Result |
|---|---|
| Chelsea | 3-1 Win |
| Aston Villa | 1-2 Loss |
| West Ham United | 2-1 Win |
| Tottenham Hotspur | 1-2 Loss |
| Bournemouth | 2-2 Draw |
But the Whites shocked everyone, taking the lead just after six minutes when Jaka Bijol scored from a corner. Ao Tanaka doubled the home side’s lead just before half-time. There were fears of a comeback when Pedro Neto pulled one back early in the second half, but a goal from Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 72nd minute was enough to seal all three points.
BBC pundit tries to defend Chelsea losing to Leeds United on Wednesday night
After the game, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca admitted that Leeds were the better side on and off the ball. However, former Premier League player Danny Murphy did not agree with that sentiment. Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, the former Fulham player said fatigue was why the Blues lost on Wednesday:
“I think there is a fatigue element to be fair to them. They have put two huge efforts in against two of the best teams in Europe – and one of them they had 10 against 11 for a long period.
“You have to take that into consideration. I also think it is the mindset as well. They are lacking that little bit of experience.
“You need experience and wisdom in games like that to manage the game. I am talking about when to drop in and when to slow the game down, when to be nice and compact.
“They are all those little things that senior players will talk you through when you might be having a bad moment. They just don’t have that in the squad.
“It’s been a good week in some ways for them, but that will bring them back down to earth and give them a little kick up the backside ready for the next few games.
“They are a very young side. I think they will have success but games like this are inevitable with the age of the squad.”
Leeds were by far the better side
Danny Murphy’s take is completely wrong; and even Maresca admitted that his team were outplayed. Leeds won their duels and made the game very physical for the visitors. The home side also created the better chances and could have scored more on a better day.

Now, Farke’s men have to build on this result as they prepare to face Liverpool this weekend. The huge boost they received from the win midweek could be enough to propel them to a result against the Reds.
