Leeds United face a major decision in the next two months that could shape their winter transfer window and how they improve the squad.

Daniel Farke’s side have made a solid start to the season, and the focus is on them maintaining this momentum ahead of the November international break.

However, the January transfer window is not far away, and the club’s recruitment team are working behind the scenes to identify potential opportunities.

Farke is not a big proponent of the January window, but Leeds may face a decision that could push them to bring in a new player in the winter window.

Beren Cross shares huge contract update

Lukas Nmecha is out of contract at the end of the season, and the forward has so far declined to sign a new deal with the club.

A few Bundesliga clubs are interested, and the striker is considering signing a pre-contract with a view to leaving Leeds on a free transfer next summer.

However, Beren Cross revealed that Leeds can extend the forward’s contract by one more year. The club would have to trigger it if they want to avoid losing him on a free.

He also claimed that Ilia Gruev’s deal has no such option and runs out at the end of the season.

“His [Nmecha’s] and Gruev’s are due to run out. I’m led to believe Nmecha’s has an option”, Cross said on The Square Ball podcast this week.

“I would need to check. But from second-hand conversations with the club, Nmecha’s contract has an option. He may well be [free to talk to other clubs from January 1st].

“I would assume if Leeds wanted to ward off any suitors, they would need to say that needs to be triggered, which negates Nmecha talking to other clubs.

“That isn’t the case with Gruev.”

Leeds have a big decision to make

The Whites face a delicate decision over Lukas Nmecha, with no obvious solution that guarantees the best outcome for everyone involved.

They could trigger the one-year extension before January, protecting his value but potentially keeping a player who wants more regular football against his wishes.

Nmecha could also agree a pre-contract with an overseas club in January, leaving Leeds with little prospect of receiving a transfer fee when his deal expires in the summer. Selling him mid-season would avoid that risk, but only if the Whites can find a suitable replacement.

That is the dilemma for Daniel Farke and the recruitment team. Leeds cannot afford to weaken their attacking options during the campaign, yet they must also consider the financial implications of losing Nmecha for nothing. Any decision must balance squad depth, the player’s ambitions and the club’s long-term interests.
