Leeds United manager Daniel Farke won’t be on the touchline at Bramall Lane on Monday night when his side will take on Sheffield United. The German has picked up three yellow cards this season, which means an automatic one-match touchline ban. The third of his three yellow cards has come under serious criticism and referee Stuart Atwell has been slammed for cautioning the German at the end of the game against Sunderland this week. The Leeds boss was penalised for stepping into the penalty area while celebrating Pascal Struijk’s injury-time winner.
The Whites will miss the German’s presence in the dugout in one of the biggest matches of the season at Sheffield United and Leeds fans are still complaining about the yellow card on Monday night.
Atwell has been slammed for lacking common sense in brandishing that yellow card against Daniel Farke and many felt the referee should have taken the occasion into context while making the decision.
Former Leeds manager Neil Warnock has minced his words and insisted that the referee cautioned Farke at the end of the game to gain his 15 minutes of fame while showing a lack of understanding of the game’s emotions.
Wilder has come in with his two cents on the topic and even he is not happy that his counterpart won’t be sparring with him on the touchline at Bramall Lane.
“Absolutely ridiculous”- Wilder gives his honest thought on the Daniel Farke touchline ban.
Wilder has not missed an opportunity to play mind games against Leeds in the last few days and has constantly tried to pile the pressure on the Whites ahead of the big game.
However, even the Sheffield United boss understands the ridiculous nature of the decision that led to Farke being banned from the touchline on Monday.
He conceded that managers getting on the book for abusing or berating the referees or attempting to influence decisions on the pitch through their actions is understandable.
However, he stressed that Farke was just celebrating a big win with his team and was punished for being on the pitch for a few seconds during the celebrations.
The Sheffield United boss is also not a fan of the three-yellow-card rule given the number of games managers have to handle each season at this level.
“I think more so from Dan’s point of view, he’ll be really disappointed and I’ve got to say, if that’s the way the game’s going, it’s just ridiculous”, Wilder said during a press conference
“I get it when it’s for abusing officials and I see managers streaming into fourth officials and berating them and getting after them. Trying to influence them and begging for everything.
“And then I see managers that are emotional and passionate and have got character. Dan showed that on Monday night and got punished for it.
“It’s absolutely ridiculous. We all understand the rules. If we step out of line we deserve to be punished. I think the punishment for three yellow cards is really harsh when you think about the amount of games Dan or myself I have to manage.”
For a change, Leeds fans are on the same page as Wilder
Warnock slammed the referee after the game, Farke was surprised by the decision and even Wilder has lent his support to the Leeds manager on the same issue.
When Warnock, Farke and Wilder agree on the same thing, you should know you have made a mess of the situation and the yellow card seems even more ridiculous.
The Leeds boss is a big presence on the touchline and his players will miss their manager while they take on the second-best team in the Championship on Monday night.
Can you name the missing player from these 10 famous Leeds United photos?
Farke will be doing his best to prepare his team and will likely remain in constant touch with his coaching staff but that is no substitute for his physical presence.
Managers take instinctive decisions that make or break games for their team, like the call to bring on Struijk and Joe Rothwell against Sunderland on Monday night.
Wilder is not a popular figure amongst Leeds fans and it takes an especially poor refereeing decision to make them sing from the same hymn sheet.
