Leeds United’s relegation rivals have been handed a major financial boost after an agreement over a big sale has been confirmed this summer.
The Whites are working under tight financial conditions this summer due to the Premier League’s new spending rules that limit their ability to pay big fees.
Leeds have an agreement in place to sign Harry Wilson on a free transfer and are pushing hard to convince Julian Brandt to move to Elland Road on another free transfer.
However, Leeds’ relegation rivals, Nottingham Forest, are set to receive a huge cash injection after a major sale has just been confirmed in the ongoing transfer window.
Nottingham Forest set to earn more than £120m from Elliot Anderson’s sale
The midfielder is with England at the World Cup, but a deal has just been agreed for him to move to Manchester City in the ongoing transfer window.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Manchester City have reached an agreement over a fee to sign Anderson from Nottingham Forest this summer.
Manchester City have agreed to pay a deal worth more than £120m to convince Forest to sell the midfielder to the Etihad outfit in the ongoing transfer window.
Anderson will become Manchester City’s most expensive signing even once he undergoes a medical and agrees personal terms on a contract.
It is unclear whether the club will wait to finalise the deal after Anderson returns from the World Cup or get him through a medical while he is in North America
However, this is a record sale for Nottingham Forest and a huge boost to their transfer coffers after a season where they survived in the Premier League.
The money will help them to cover the loss of income from the lack of European football next season. Anderson was certain to leave this summer, but Forest have managed to get the most premium fee possible.
Leeds United do not have that sort of money to spend
Their focus on signing high-value free transfers is a clear strategy. Dominic Calvert-Lewin worked out fine last season, and they hope Wilson will have a similar impact.
Brandt is also available on a free transfer, and there is a reason why the club are shopping in the free agents’ market.
They are still not an established Premier League club and cannot go out and spend the kind of money supporters would want them to.
Signing free agents is one way of ensuring that they get more out of the budget they have and find a way to pay big fees for a striker or a goalkeeper if needed.
Leeds could sell one or two important players, but the club want to retain their best players rather and build on them.
