Daniel Farke has surpassed expectations to guide Leeds United to a 14th-place finish in their first season back in the Premier League.
The recent performances of promoted teams and Farke’s own dreadful record in the Premier League meant Leeds started the season as overwhelming favourites to go down.
However, Leeds defied expectations and secured Premier League safety with games to spare. Their final day defeat at West Ham would be nothing but a footnote for this season.
Farke has made it clear he wants stronger backing from the Leeds United board, recently admitting he is not the right manager for the club if the ambition is simply to stand still.
Leeds are set to spend big after Daniel Farke comments
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness is not surprised that Daniel Farke is trying to stamp his authority on the club after securing Premier League safety.
He has stressed that the Leeds manager has the fans’ backing and now deserves proper backing from the Leeds board in the upcoming transfer window.
The ex-Everton chief is expecting the Leeds board to do some ‘serious spending’ after not properly backing the manager last summer.
Wyness told Football Insider: “It doesn’t seem that long ago when we talked about Farke possibly being on the sack list and yet here he is now.
“Farke is loved by the fans, he’s got them playing well, and he’s done a good job and easily kept them up in the end. So what does it mean for him? Well, he’s putting his authority on it. I don’t think there’s any way they’re going to get rid of him.
“Farke’s just saying, these are the things I’ve been telling you about. This is what we need, and he’s quite right to do that. He’s got a chance to do it, and Leeds should back him.
“Now, Farke didn’t really get the backing last year, but this year, Leeds have got to push the bout out slightly better than they did before. So I do expect to see some serious spending again from Leeds.”
Huge summer for Leeds
The upcoming transfer window is going to be very different to the one Leeds had last summer following their promotion to the Premier League.
Leeds United needed a major rebuild last summer, with the focus on signing players capable of helping the club survive in the Premier League. But the task facing them this time around is very different, and likely to come with a much bigger price tag.
Farke needs upgrades in certain positions to take the squad to the next level and ensure that the Whites do not stand still.
Leeds decided against spending big money on any individual player last summer, which allowed them to bring in as many as 10 new faces.
However, that needs to change in the upcoming window as upgrades are unlikely to be cheap and they need exactly that to ensure the squad keep moving forward.
