Leeds United’s ruthless dig at Crysencio Summerville hits hard as former star relegated

Leeds United ended their campaign on a sour note after slipping to a 3-0 defeat against West Ham United away from home. However, the result ultimately had little impact, with the Hammers already heading for relegation.

Valentín Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson were all on the scoresheet as West Ham gave their fans something to cheer about in their final home game of a difficult season. Still, Tottenham’s win over Everton sealed their relegation from the Premier League.

Daniel Farke is likely to rue his side’s missed opportunities in the opening half, particularly after Dominic Calvert-Lewin wasted a gilt-edged chance that quickly became a talking point.

However, the Leeds boss was quick to empathise with his former player Crysencio Summerville at the end of the game after he and the Hammers suffered relegation from the Premier League.

Leeds United had a dig at Crysencio Summerville.

Summerville left Leeds to join West Ham in 2024 when the Whites failed to win promotion after losing the playoff final at Wembley.

The Dutchman thought he was moving on to better things, but just two years later, Leeds are secure in the Premier League while he is now part of a relegated team.

West Ham needed everything to go right if they were to survive in the Premier League ahead of the game, and it seems Leeds were aware of what was going to happen.

Leeds’ pre-match graphic was a direct dig at Summerville, who suffered the ignominy of relegation with West Ham.

It showed Leeds players, Ethan Ampadu and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, going up on an escalator while an arm of a West Ham player, who is almost certainly Summerville, is going down.

The club did not shy away from having a dig at their former player just ahead of the big game at the London Stadium, and their prophecy came true.

The Whites should not re-sign him

There has been plenty of speculation linking Crysencio Summerville with a return to Leeds United during the summer transfer window.

Leeds are clearly in need of more creativity and attacking quality, and the Dutch winger has already shown he can perform in the Premier League, even if it came in a side that ended up being relegated.

That said, a move back to Elland Road may not be the right call. Some supporters could struggle to welcome back a player who chose to leave rather than stay and help the club fight for promotion.

It’s the kind of distraction Leeds could do without next season, especially when there are other strong options available on the market.

He stayed a year and did his utmost to get you ungrateful bastards promoted. The fact he was surrounded by dross wasn’t his fault. Maybe grow up a bit, yeah?
