Leeds United have completely revamped their approach to the market since the last time they were relegated in 2023. Since then, the club has become smarter on recruitment and other matters.
When the Whites went down in 2023, it came with a mass exodus of signings.
Most of the players that joined the season they were relegated were scrambling to avoid playing in the Championship. The club has taken many steps to avoid a repeat of that.
Now, Leeds sell the project to the players before agreeing to transfers.
It has been evident in the arrivals over the past year. That has helped massively, as well as the club not adding relegation release clauses in recent deals.
Leeds United must avoid James Trafford demand ahead of transfer
As of this week, reports have emerged that Leeds United are pushing to complete the signing of James Trafford.
The Manchester City keeper has given his okay, and now both clubs are trying to work out the details of a transfer. It is believed that City value the England star as high as £40 million this summer.
If agreed, clause would be for specific clubs/circumstances within Trafford’s Leeds contract.

One key thing Ben Jacobs and Alex Crook mentioned was that both parties are discussing a release clause.
Jacobs further added that this clause would be for ‘specific clubs/circumstances’ in Trafford’s contract.
And seeing as how Leeds were only recently promoted, it is easy to guess that it will be a relegation clause. Seeing how that clause has been an issue in the last few years, the club should avoid or reject it altogether.

Transfer clause has no benefit for Leeds
The argument would be that Leeds had to include it to convince Trafford to join.
Maybe the keeper sees himself at a ‘bigger’ club in the next few years. But it should not be that way; the England man must understand the Leeds are giving him the chance to do something great.
Leading this club with their heritage in English football is a very big step.
If the player is concerned about relegation, the 49ers have showed that they are building a team to last in the top flight. And as for release clauses for certain clubs, Leeds have never held players hostage.
It would be in the best interest of the club and the player for any potential clauses to be removed if he is to sign this summer.
