Leeds United executed an almost flawless first half at Old Trafford as they cruised to a 2-1 win over Manchester United. Michael Carrick’s side were probably not expecting what Daniel Farke’s men brought on the night.
Leeds executed their game plan to perfection from kick off, and took the lead just five minutes into the game when Noah Okafor pounced on a poor clearance to score. In the first half, Manchester United were on the back foot – the Whites had more big chances, more shoots and more shots on target.
Jamie Carragher praised how well Leeds played in the first half of the game, saying it was key to their win. And Roy Keane praised Daniel Farke’s approach to the game which lead them to the win.
Leeds United star stands out in win over Manchester United
Key to that first half performance was how well the Leeds United midfield played. Ao Tanaka and Ethan Ampadu completely outplayed their opponents in the middle of the park. Tanaka especially stood out, with his passing and composure in tight spaces. The Japanese international was a standout on the night and earned plaudits from Jamie Carragher: “Manchester United have been absolutely battered, we’ve seen the stats there, the two midfield players, Ampadu and Tanaka, have been absolutely outstanding and Manchester United were fortunate it wasn’t 3-0.”
Tanaka created four chances in the match, and only lost out in one of his defensive duels in the match. He had to be taken off late in the game after picking up a knock in the second half.

Whites cannot sell Ao Tanaka this summer
Since January, the Japanese midfielder has been sidelined – limited minutes in the first team. His only chance at regular minutes has been playing in the FA Cup run. And it was probably how well he played against West Ham in the quarterfinal that lead Daniel Farke to start him in the absence of Anton Stach on Monday night.
Reports claim that due to lack of playing time, the 27-year old is looking for a summer exit. Clubs in Germany are reportedly eyeing him over a potential summer transfer. But Leeds will be very silly to let go of such a talent. His first season was spectacular, and even though he has struggled in this campaign, he has shown flashes. Ao Tanaka is one of the club’s most valuable midfielders, and he must be treated like it.
