Leeds United’s January striker dilemma: who would accept a supporting role?

Leeds United did not sign a striker in the summer window despite spending a lot of money. The 49ers recruited Dominic Calvert-Lewi and Lukas Nmecha last year, and will count on them this season.

After finishing in 14th place last year, the club was intent on improving the squad this summer.

They have since added James Trafford, Nico Elvedi, Tarik Muharemovic and Harry Wilson. Leeds have been very good to start the season; unbeaten in the league and in fifth place.

Most of the new signings have gotten off to a great start.

But there is still some concern that the team did not add more firepower in the summer window.

The Whites will have Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha as their only senior centre forward options.

Club chief Robbie Evans explained that Leeds United were never going to sign a striker to replace Calvert-Lewin. Which changed their transfer plans because whoever they were going to sign would have to accept his role.

It was a similar situation with the pursuit of Shea Charles, where the financial factors and the squad building determined their decision.

Leeds are right to not have dipped into the market; there are very few players available that would be affordable. And almost all of them would prefer a starting role and not come off the bench.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored 15 goals last season, and was one of the highest-scoring English players.

The club signed him on a free transfer, any player who can put up these numbers would cost in excess of £40 million in this market.

Should the club pursue a striker in January?

This is tough question, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been great so far, and Lukas Nmecha has already chipped in with a goal contribution. The fact that only two senior strikers are in the first team is a concern.

Which means if one gets injured, there will be no natural replacement on the bench.

Lukas Nmecha’s future is also something that is undecided – he is out of contract next summer and there is no word on if Leeds will renew.

If January arrives, he is free to discuss a pre-contract to leave ass a free agent. But getting some more firepower in the winter window could go a long way, Leeds nearly did that with their bid for Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Having the security of multiple options available will be a huge boost to the team.
