Manchester United have grown more frustrated by Lisandro Martinez’s red card against Leeds United, more than a week after it happened at Old Trafford.
The Manchester United defender was shown a straight red card for violent conduct after he tugged at Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair bun at Old Trafford last week.
They went on to lose the game 2-1 at Old Trafford, and Manchester United manager Michael Carrick termed it as one of the worst refereeing decisions he has ever seen.
More than a week on from the incident, Manchester United remain upset about what happened to Martinez, and the refereeing decisions over the weekend have only added to their frustration.
Manchester United are not over the Lisandro Martinez red vs Leeds
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United very much feel aggrieved at what happened to Martinez and the needless red card given by referee Paul Tierney.
The club feel there was nothing to indicate the defender acted violently toward the Leeds striker and believe the red card was an overreaction.
Manchester United’s frustrations have grown over the weekend after similar incidents didn’t warrant the same punishment by the officials.
Brentford’s Dango Ouatarra avoided a red card for a hair pull on Fulham’s Calvin Bassey. A free-kick was awarded by Tierney, the same official who sent off Martinez against Leeds.
The FA decided no retrospective action was necessary against Ouatarra, as both the referee, Tierney, and VAR official Craig Pawson had assessed the incident in real time.
Martinez missed Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Chelsea due to the suspension and will not be available for the next two games against Brentford and Liverpool.
The Whites have moved on
Leeds made the most of any perceived luck they enjoyed to walk away with all three points against Manchester United last week and followed it up with a home win over Wolves.
The two victories have eased the pressure on Leeds ahead of their trip to face an in-form Bournemouth team tonight.
They have an eight-point cushion over the relegation zone, and another win will almost certainly guarantee them safety in the Premier League this season.
Leeds also have an FA Cup semi-final to look forward to on Sunday against a Chelsea side, who are on the club’s worst run in the league in 114 years.
Manchester United may still be moaning, but Leeds have moved on from their victory at Old Trafford.
