Harry Gray made his senior debut for Leeds United towards the end of last season when he was just 16 years old, but he did not feature again for the Whites before departing on loan earlier this month.
As the latest talent to emerge from the well-known Gray family, his development has naturally attracted increased attention, with the 17-year-old striker continuing his progress largely out of the public eye.
Daniel Farke has been keen to manage expectations, repeatedly emphasising the importance of shielding the teenager from undue pressure. Despite training regularly with the first team, Harry Gray was not called upon this season.
His omission from Leeds’ FA Cup win over Derby County appeared to point towards a shift in plans, and he went on to complete a loan move to League One side Rotherham United earlier in the transfer window.
Rotherham boss reacts to the Harry Gray goal in a win on Tuesday night
Gray scored his first senior goal on Tuesday night in Rotherham United’s 2-1 win over Northampton Town. The result ended a run of 11 League One games without a win for the home side.
The 17-year-old striker is getting a good taste of competitive senior football in the third tier, and Hamshaw insisted that he has been a spark for the club since he joined the club.
The Rotherham boss also quipped that the young Leeds loanee will have to celebrate responsibly after scoring his first goal at the senior level.
He was quoted as saying by Barrhead news: “We’re a bit low on confidence, on a run of defeats, and then all of a sudden we get a bit of a spark.
“Harry scores his first senior goal, which is amazing for him, and it couldn’t have gone better with Manny scoring.
“They are two players we’ve brought in this window, and they’ve made a huge impact.”
Hamshaw quipped, “He’ll have to celebrate with a Coke Zero!”
Leeds hope the gamble on Gray will pay off
Leeds supporters have already voiced concerns about the decision to loan the young striker to a League One side battling near the foot of the table.
It has since emerged, however, that the move was driven by Gray himself, with the teenager opting to leave Leeds and choosing Rotherham United as his next step. It is a bold call and one that may surprise some fans, as he has backed himself to make an impact at a struggling League One club.
Rotherham’s attacking numbers have been modest, and goals are likely to be hard-earned against some of the division’s physically demanding defences.

The win over Northampton Town was their first win in 12 League One games, and they are still 23rd in the table while remaining as the favourites to get relegated from the third tier.
While Leeds fans will be hoping he flourishes during the loan spell, Gray has taken a significant risk, trusting in his ability and finishing instincts to succeed in a challenging environment.
