Sam Allardyce gives Leeds United transfer verdict – ”…not good enough” for Premier League

Before Leeds United hired Daniel Farke, they went through three coaches in one season in 2022/23. All the changes did not work out as the club eventually found themselves back down in the Championship.

Jesse Marsch was backed in the transfer market after his effort saw Leeds survive relegation the previous season. The former Red Bull coach was sacked around Feburary, with Javi Gracia taking charge. After a run of poor form, Sam Allardyce was brought in for the final month of the season as the club hoped to survive relegation again.

Sadly, Big Sam could not get the job done as Leeds went back down to the Championship. Daniel Farke took charge in the summer of 2023, and the rest is history. Tasked with taking Leeds back up to the Premier League, he almost achieved his aim in his first season – but Southampton denied the Whites in the play off final.

Farke bounced back this season – winning promotion, hitting a 100 points and winning the league title.

Leeds face a return to the English top flight after a successful season in the Championship. This summer is set to pivotal, as the club prepare for the Premier League. The Whites will know that building a quality team will be the difference between survival and relegation.

Sam Allardyce, who was in charge when the club went down in 2023, believes one thing can help the club this summer. The former England boss has told Leeds to avoid some transfers if they want to stay up:

“You can’t keep going out for those (Tanaka-type transfers), you can’t keep going out for the £4m (signings),” Allardyce said on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.

“If that’s the level that you want to achieve, somewhere along the line, Leeds are going to have to spend.

“These are where all the clubs previously have been relegated because they’ve spread the budget for maybe seven, eight, nine, 10 players, and they’re not good enough.”

Daniel Farke will be trusted with some of the recruitment this summer, according to club chairman Paraag Marathe.

Big Sam is wrong

Not every signing needs to be a big money move. Sometimes quality lies in value. Leeds got Ethan Ampadu for less than £10million, and he has become one of the best midfielders in the Championship. Liverpool got Andrew Robertson for a similar amount when Hull City got relegated. The Scotland international is now one of the best left backs in the world.

Once you’re able to spot value, the amount is negligible sometimes.
