Troy Deeney delivers brutal verdict on Leeds new boy: “Very lightweight”

Leeds United kicked off their season with a win away to Nottingham Forest. Daniel Farke’s men have gotten off to a great start despite the performance on Saturday.

The Leeds boss himself admitted the game was not impressive; they managed to win after Anton Stach scored a late free kick.

Moments of attacking quality were not many in a game where Forest will feel they could have got a result. Oliver Glasner even pointed out that the away side barely entered his side’s half.

A lot of the moments came from dead balls and set pieces, but ultimately the Whites came out victorious.

A big part of the result was James Trafford. On his debut, he made three saves to help his side secure a clean sheet.

The Leeds United keeper also swept up behind the defence on crucial occasions to stop Forest’s attacks. Paul Merson was full of praise for the England international, who joined this summer.

But some have not been impressed with Trafford joining Leeds.

Troy Deeney has said on the talkSPORT Premier League All Access podcast that he is not really high on the new number on at Elland Road.

“In regard to James Trafford, he went to Man City, in two weeks, they were like ‘we need another goalkeeper’,” Deeney said.

“I think Durham said something to the effect of, he will be in the conversation for (playing for England in) the Euros or something? Pushing Jordan Pickford? I don’t see it. He’s very lightweight. For as good as he is with his feet, he makes a lot of mistakes that cost goals, but let’s see, I wish the guy well.”

Deeney’s assessment of James Trafford is very unfair

To judge James Trafford’s transfer this early into his Leeds United career is very unfair to the player.

He was not bad at Manchester City, he just was not Pep Guardiola’s preferred number one. And the only reason City signed Donnarumma was because one of the world’s best keeper was available for a low fee.

Trafford was key in both trophies that his side won last year.

Leeds have brought him in on such a huge fee because he will be the club’s long-term number one. And his status in English football is undeniable, he is fairly tipped to become England number one after Pickford for a reason.
