Leeds United went into Saturday’s game against Wolves knowing a win couple open the gap between them and the relegation zone. It was just last week that the Whites were under pressure following results from West Ham and Nottingham Forest.
Because of the club’s record at Elland Road, most fans were optimistic of a result. And in just 20 minutes on Saturday, Daniel Farke’s men scored twice. Noah Okafor continued his fine form from the Manchester United game, while James Justin scored an incredible acrobatic effort.
Wolves tried to mount a comeback in the second half, and created some chances but Leeds held firm. A late penalty from Dominic Calvert-Lewin was enough to seal a huge 3-0 home win. The Whites are now eight points above the relegation zone with five games to go.
Leeds set to make Daniel Farke contract decision
The season is not over yet, but the 49ers are reportedly making plans. Ahead of the summer transfer window, the Whites are identifying serious targets to improve the quality of the team. Recruitment last year was okay, but the club still has a few players they can improve upon.
And as of Monday, Beren Cross of The Athletic has reported a huge update on Daniel Farke’s future. According to the report, the club and Farke will hold off of any contract extension talks till the end of the season. The German’s contract expires in 2027, and the ownership want to come to a decision. Cross added that Leeds considered Farke’s future after he won the Championship, and that the Leeds boss’ future was seriously considered around November last year.
Extension would be a surprising move from the 49ers
Leeds United are eight points clear of the bottom and look favourites to beat the drop, but the season is not over yet. Fans cannot afford to celebrate until the Whites are mathematically safe. From the ownership’s stance, it is the right move to wait before deciding on an extension. It will be very surprising to people outside the club that the 49-year old is being considered for the long term. Per the report, Farke was almost sacked twice, which means although the club are happy with him now, they will not hesitate to sack him if things go left. Survival this season will likely mean that the Leeds boss remains in charge for the next few years.
