Leeds United took a big step when it comes to securing their Premier League status for next season, defeating Wolves 3-0 at Elland Road.
Goals from James Justin, Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were enough to ensure Leeds United made it back-to-back wins in the league for the first time this season.
With the Whites now sitting on 39 points with just five games to go, and an eight-point buffer between themselves and the drop zone, many notable pundits, such as Gary Lineker, are seemingly confident that Leeds will be in the top flight next season.
Ally McCoist is the latest pundit to give his insight on the relegation battle at the bottom of the Premier League, with the Scotsman sharing Lineker’s confidence that United will stay up.
Ally McCoist claims Tottenham are running out of time to catch Leeds
With a home game against Burnley still to come for Daniel Farke’s side, there are plenty of reasons to be confident that the Whites can take their points tally over that precious 40-point mark before the season concludes.
Speaking about Leeds on talkSPORT Breakfast, McCoist claimed that Tottenham, who currently sit in 18th, are running out of time to catch the likes of Leeds and Nottingham Forest as the pair continue to pick up valuable points.
“Tottenham are running out of games, and the teams around them are winning games, whether it’s Leeds or Forest. The West Ham game is massive tonight,” McCoist said.
“But the fact of the matter is that it is the second point Tottenham have taken in nine games; they haven’t won a league game this year. So what makes us think they’re going to pick up 10 out of 15 points?
“I know they might not have to if West Ham don’t pick up points, but they’re certainly going to need a vast improvement because Forest and Leeds keep picking up points.”
Up next for Spurs is a trip to Molineux to face Wolves, and you would assume that if they were to drop points in that, then Leeds’ survival would be all but confirmed.
Data suggests Leeds’ survival hopes have been handed a major boost
Following United’s monumental win over Wolves, Opta’s supercomputer has updated to give its latest relegation verdict.
According to their data, Leeds are virtually guaranteed to avoid the drop, as the pressure continues to build for their relegation rivals.
- According to Opta, Leeds’ chances of getting relegated are now just 0.43%
- Nottingham Forest are said to have a 4.5% chance of going down
- West Ham have a 38.47% chance of getting relegated, whilst Spurs’ chances sit at a whopping 56.58%
Due to Leeds’ advantageous position in the league, Farke may choose to rest a couple of players in midweek against Bournemouth, with one eye on their FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea next Sunday.
