Leeds United may have been forced to accept a major compromise to finalise a major new contract at Elland Road this year.

Several players signed fresh deals over the summer to extend their stay at Elland Road as Leeds secured the futures of its top players.

Jayden Bogle and Ethan Ampadu signed new long-term contracts, and Brenden Aaronson also agreed to replace his old deal, set to expire next year, with a new one.

However, one negotiation has dragged on for months, and while an agreement in principle is in place, the final deal has not been formalised yet.

Leeds may have been forced to accept a major compromise

Daniel Farke has agreed in principle to sign a new contract until 2029, but he has yet to sign.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness has claimed Farke likely used RB Leipzig’s interest to extract a better deal from the Yorkshire giants.

While the length of the new deal means Leeds can get rid of Farke at a reasonable cost, he said the German has almost certainly secured a release clause in the contract.

“I think it makes a fair amount of sense for both of them [Farke and Leeds]”, Wyness told Football Insider.

“From Farke’s point of view, RB Leipzig were interested in talking to him as well, so there’s interest there that he managed to get some pressure probably from to try and squeeze the club a bit to make a decision.

“But in the same way that Leeds have extended him, they know that only two and a half years, if things went wrong, they can get rid of him at a reasonable cost as well.

“And at the same time, he’s now got a reasonable escape clause that the compensation won’t be that bad.”

A release clause will be a problem for Leeds

The reported release clause in Daniel Farke’s new Leeds United contract could prove a headache for the club if they are serious about building something long-term under the German.

Leeds may see Farke as the right man to take them forward, but a clause that allows him to leave under certain conditions could leave them vulnerable if another club comes calling. With managerial vacancies capable of emerging quickly, the 49ers could find themselves scrambling for a replacement just when stability matters most.

There is also the risk of losing the progress made under Farke without much control over when he leaves. Leeds need continuity to develop their squad and establish themselves in the Premier League.

If the reported clause is too easy to trigger, it could undermine that plan before it has really taken shape.
