Leeds United will have a real headache next week when the contracts at Elland Road expire. As things stand, three first team players could leave the club this summer.

Alex Cairns decided to accept a new offer from the Whites, to remain as their backup keeper.

One confirmed departure will be Illan Meslier, after Leeds announced they would not be giving him a new deal. That could leave the club with just two first team goalkeepers under contract.

Karl Darlow has an offer on the table, but is yet to sign it.

Lucas Perri remains at the club, but there was interest in him in January and he could be a target this summer.

Adam Pope makes major claim about Leeds United star

Journalist Adam Pope has been speaking on the Don’t Go To Bed Yet podcast about the current situation at Leeds United.

To him, he thinks the Whites need to be active in the market to try and get a new goalkeeper. Karl Darlow is yet to decide his future, and that could be holding up transfer plans this summer.

He also thinks that Lucas Perri will be sold if a decent enough offer comes in.

“I don’t know if focusing in on Karl Darlow is the answer to the problem.

“I think there’s a bigger, there’s a wider view where he does go and be third ‘keeper or whatever at Man U or whatever he wants to do, and we sign someone else.

“I mean, I do feel like if, in the next few weeks, they got a great offer for Perri that they wanted to accept, and then you have Darlow as second, and they buy someone else, I think that’s probably the dream scenario.

“But that needs a lot of, you know, jigsaw pieces to come together, doesn’t it?”

Leeds need to be proactive in this situation

Adam Pope makes a great point, sitting on your hands and waiting for Karl Darlow may not be the best option for Leeds.

Contracts expire next week and there is no word if the Welshman is read to commit to staying at Elland Road. The main competitors seem to be Manchester United at this point.

They can offer him more money than Leeds at this point of his career.

So now, the choice will be down to the veteran – take Leeds United’s offer and remain first choice next season or be the reserve keeper at Old Trafford.

The 49ers must give him an ultimatum before moving on to other targets.

Waiting on Darlow could potentially be catastrophic, considering how the transfer situations of the club’s targets can change in an instant.
