Jason Cundy blasts Leeds United flop’s shock World Cup selection live on-air: “I don’t know how”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was left disappointed after the Leeds United striker was left out of the England squad for the World Cup last week.

The forward scored 14 Premier League goals this season and has been one of the most in-form English strikers. However, Tuchel picked Ivan Toney, who has been playing in Saudi Arabia for the last two seasons.

Calvert-Lewin’s absence was not the only shock in the squad. The England manager left out several other in-form players, such as Morgan Gibbs-White and Harry Maguire.

Toney was also not the only shock selection in the squad. Tuchel’s decision to include former Leeds flop Djed Spence in the flight to the World Cup shocked many, including Jason Cundy.

Jason Cundy hammers the selection of Djed Spence over others

Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy were going through the England squad on talkSPORT Sports Bar on Tuesday night and discussing the names that missed out.

Cundy conceded that, as an England fan, he needs to trust Tuchel’s decision. However, he admitted he doesn’t understand how Djed Spence and Tino Livramento made the World Cup squad.

He insisted that Newcastle’s Lewis Hall is a much-deserving candidate and had to be in the set-up for the World Cup in North America this summer.

Cundy said, “You have got to trust Tuchel’s decisions, but I don’t agree with all the players in the squad.

“I don’t know how Djed Spence is in there, and Livramento.

“Lewis Hall had to be in the squad.”

Jayden Bogle and James Justin were more deserving than Spence

Djed Spence is part of a Tottenham team that was almost relegated from the Premier League this season, and he didn’t exactly pull up trees.

The full-back only broke into the England squad recently, and only has four international caps to his name.

If Tuchel wanted a more attacking full-back in his squad, he could have picked either Jayden Bogle or James Justin from Leeds this summer.

Bogle has been one of the best attacking full-backs in the Premier League this season and more than deserved an England call-up. Justin’s versatility would have added something different to the Three Lions set-up.

Both play for a Leeds team that outperformed Tottenham, and were the better attacking full-backs than Spence in the Premier League this season.

However, they either do not play for one of the traditional ‘big six’ clubs, or they represent sides such as Tottenham Hotspur, who have finished 17th in each of the last two Premier League seasons.

Keep it quiet. Lots of teams are looking for acting full backs and Leeds have 3 of the best in Gudmanson B and JJ. WE don’t want Liverpool, ManU or other clubs in Europe waltzing in for our best players.
