Leeds United sit eighth in the Premier League table and could move up to sixth if they beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light this season.

Daniel Fark’s side has been tipped to finish in the top ten this season. However, some pundits feel if things go according to plan, Leeds could be ready to qualify for European football.

However, Farke has been quick to pour cold water on Leeds’ ambition and believes the Whites, as a squad or club, are not ready to qualify for Europe yet.

The manager’s caution has disappointed fans, but Alan Smith has insisted the Whites are definitely in the race to qualify for European football.

Alan Smith makes his feelings clear on Leeds

The former Arsenal star has insisted Leeds are in the race to finish in Europe this season, with Sunderland unlikely to be in contention.

He feels Leeds are a well-organised, physical side that can compete with the best Premier League teams.

“I think they could finish in a European spot”, Smith said.

“You look at the teams that did it last year. I don’t think Sunderland will be in one this year.

“So, along with the Brightons and the Brentfords, if they carry on like this. You saw at Arsenal what a well-organised team they are and what a threat they can be against a top side.

“So again, Daniel Farke’s side are a physical team who put themselves about, and that’s what they’ve got to try and sustain as well. But it’s not beyond them to claim a European spot.”

Farke must embrace the European ambition

The manager doesn’t need to promise Leeds will qualify for Europe, but he should avoid making supporters feel foolish for dreaming about it. Fans have spent years watching their club lurch between divisions, and they have every right to want something more than Premier League survival.

Nobody expects Leeds to suddenly compete with the country’s richest clubs. Supporters understand the challenge, the financial constraints, and the work needed to build a squad capable of challenging for higher finishes. But ambition is not the same as expectation.

The 49ers have spoken about building Leeds into a major force, and that vision needs a manager willing to embrace the possibilities rather than constantly highlight the obstacles.

Farke can preach patience without putting a ceiling on what Leeds might achieve. Football is full of unexpected breakthroughs. Leeds should chase those opportunities, not dismiss them before they arrive.
