Chris Wilder gives Leeds United green light to raid Sheffield United star in January

Chris Wilder Leeds United

All eyes are on the 49ers as Leeds United approach the January transfer window. The club has experienced a significant turnaround over the last few games.

Things felt impossible when the club was set to have a difficult fixture list following the last international break. Daniel Farke’s job was also on the line, with many expecting him to be sacked. Leeds had to face Aston Villa, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive games.

But against all odds, the team’s fighting spirit and some tactical genius from Farke and a patch of fine goalscoring from Dominic Calvert-Lewin has helped turn things around. In the club’s last three games, they have picked up five points from a possible nine against Chelsea, Liverpool and Brentford.

Chris Wilder opens door for Leeds United target exit

With the team in some decent form, many fans are expecting the ownership to back the manager when the January window opens in a few weeks. One of the targets could be Sheffield United star Gus Hamer. After missing out on a move in the summer, the midfielder has not had the best of campaigns under Chris Wilder.

The Blades boss has now admitted that the club could let the 28-year-old go if the right offer comes in:

“I don’t know what’s going to happen in January. I’d like to keep all the players that we’ve talked about, and get to a situation where, at the end of the season, we are just adding sort of two or three,” Wilder said to the Sheffield Star.

“[And] Keeping our best players.

“But if that time comes, if somebody comes in with an offer that we can’t refuse, we’ve got to put that to the board and see where we are from that,”

Whites could do with a creative midfielder

Hamer is woefully out of form this season, but his quality is undeniable. His last Premier League campaign with a newly-promoted side saw him rack up 10 goal contributions (four goals, six assists) for a poor Blades side.

Gus Hamer Last Four Seasons
Season Games Goals Assists
2021/22 40 3 9
2022/23 45 11 10
2023/24 40 5 8
2024/25 46 10 8

The 28-year-old has creativity and a goalscoring threat from the middle of the park, two things Leeds will need going forward. Farke has many options in midfield that can keep the ball and control a game, but the team lacks a midfielder with a decisive edge like Hamer. If the 49ers decide to spend, the Blades star should be one of the first names on the list.
