Daniel Farke’s Leeds United shared a tense rivalry with Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United in the Championship, and the two teams went toe-to-toe in promotion battles.
However, Leeds are now in a different stratosphere after surviving their first season back in the Premier League and are spending big to establish themselves in the top flight again.
While Wilder is now trying to rebuild Sheffield United following his return to Bramall Lane last season and is hoping to launch another promotion campaign in the upcoming season.
Despite the gulf that now exists between the two Yorkshire clubs, Wilder could not resist taking a cheeky swipe at Leeds ahead of the new season.

Chris Wilder harks back to finishing below Leeds United in the 2024/25 season
Wilder’s experience of taking teams up to the Premier League means Sheffield United cannot be counted out of the promotion battle next season.
However, the Blades boss insisted that his team will have to overachieve if they want to get promoted to the Premier League in the upcoming campaign.
He pointed out that Sheffield United had the fourth-highest wage bill when they finished third on 90 points in the 2024/25 season.
The Sheffield United boss highlighted the fact that Leeds and Burnley, who earned automatic promotion, had almost double the budget that his team had.
Wilder said in a press conference when asked about his team’s promotion hopes: “Having a go for promotion? We will always try to overachieve; that’s always going to be the case.
“When we got to 92 points [90], our wage bill was fourth in the division, and we got to third.
“And the two teams with double our budget and wage bill went up.
“Usually the teams at the top of the divisions are the teams with big wage budgets.”
Money is not the only reason Leeds United earned promotion
Leeds United’s promotion in the 2024/25 season was not down to just having greater financial resources. They had a bigger budget than most of the Championship teams, but money alone does not get you out of a tough league such as the Championship, as several teams have found out.
Daniel Farke and the recruitment team deserve enormous credit for building a squad with a clear identity and playing style. Yes, Leeds did spend money, but they didn’t chase big-name stars; they focused on more effective and planned-out recruitment.
Players were brought in that fitted Farke’s system, and the Leeds manager built a team whose consistency other Championship sides struggled to match.
Leeds also had to rebuild their squad after losing key players following their playoff final defeat at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
Wilder may be right about wage bills and their correlation to league finishes, but more goes into building a successful side than just money.

I think Chris realises that and is trying to replicate what Daniel achieved albeit with a a very limited budget partly due to owner constraints and their apparent limited knowledge of how to run a football club.
