When Leeds United signed Facundo Buoanotte in the January window, there was a lot of excitement around Elland Road. Many thought the club had finally landed a creative playmaker.
The Whites have been without that profile since Georginio Rutter left Elland Road. Daniel Farke wanted to replace the Frenchman, but Leeds thought other areas in the squad needed more attention. The lack of quality in attack has been obvious this season, but the club have done their best to overcome their limitations. So far, Buonanotte has not worked out, and he will return to Brighton in the summer.
Chris Wilder hints that Leeds United target will be sold
Leeds United could return to sign a playmaker this summer, depending on how the rest of the season goes. The recruitment spent the last summer chasing the likes of Bilal El Khannouss and Emi Buendia without success.
However, this summer could be different as a long-term target could be on the table once again. According to Chris Wilder this week, Sheffield United will consider selling key players like Gus Hamer in the summer in order to raise funds. The Blades boss admitted this while speaking to BBC Sport.
”I think it is the same as it will always be. If we have to sell a player or two, then we will do as we will not give them away. We have to raise money; the owners put in a lot of money to buy the club, and invested a lot at the start of the season.
”So if that is the case, I am okay with that. We can’t develop these players and let them go for nothing, we can’t buy the players and let them go for free.”
”But we are hopeful that we keep the majority of our players, and if we have to sell and the price is right, we will do that and carry on from that point.”

Whites need to move on from Gus Hamer
Gus Hamer was a solid option to be a target years ago when the Whites were still in the Championship. Now, Leeds United are in the Premier League and need a different level of quality. Even this past summer when the club brought in 10 new players, there are still some that need to be upgraded on. Sure Daniel Farke would like a midfielder who is creative and can get goals, but for where the club want to find themselves, a player like Hamer is not an ideal target.
And outside that, the club have more issues to worry about than midfielders. Goals have been a problem, which could see a new center forward brought in. There is also the current situation involving the goalkeepers, as the club could lose up to three this summer. All this would need to be addressed before the 49ers even think of possibly signing the Sheffield United star.
