Going into Saturday’s match at Elland Road, some Leeds fans were anxious. After beating Manchester United, the club had a huge chance to extend their gap from the relegation zone.
Wolves were not going to be an easy side, even with everyone anticipating a win before the game. However, Leeds were not complacent and put the visitors to the sword in the first half with two goals. Noah Okafor continued his fine form, and James Justin somehow found himself on the scoresheet after a wonderful acrobatic effort.
The visitors tried to work their way back into the game in the second half, but could not find the back of the net. Dominic Calvert-Lewin wrapped up the game from the penalty spot in the final minutes.
Dermot Gallagher defends refereeing decision in Leeds vs Wolves game
Leeds were given a penalty late in the game when the striker was tripped up by Hugo Bueno in the box, before he had the chance to shoot. Referee Farai Hallam gave the decision in real time, and VAR backed the decision. Wolves boss Rob Edward disagreed with the decision, with Bueno claiming he got a touch on the ball in protest.
On Sky Sports‘ Ref Watch show, Dermot Gallagher defended Hallam’s decision, saying: “I think the ball is the clue, isn’t it?” Gallagher said. “If he touches the ball, it’s a different decision but he doesn’t touch the ball does he? What he’s done is come across the forward.
“The argument is that Calvert-Lewin kicks the back of Bueno. But he kicks the back of him because he’s put himself there to block Calvert-Lewin from getting to the ball.”

Leeds fans will be happy
Leeds United fans will be very happy they got the decision their way, and the fact that Dermot Gallagher backed it. This comes just a week after the Whites also saw Lisandro Martinez rightly sent off at Old Trafford. The defender pulled on Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair and was sent off for violet conduct. Michael Carrick’s side argued the decision, and even appealed it but it was rejected by the FA. This is consecutive decisions that have gone in favour of the club, after months of having controversial decisions against them. After a win this weekend, things are looking up for the club as they take a huge step closer to safety.
