Premier League clubs have been paying close attention ever since Burnley successfully won compensation from Everton following their legal dispute. Now, Leeds United have emerged as the latest club to take action, with fresh developments surfacing in the last hour.

Everton were found to have breached the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) during the 2021/22 season, the campaign in which they narrowly avoided relegation.

The Merseyside club were eventually handed a six-point deduction in the 2023/24 season, prompting the clubs relegated in 2021/22 to argue that the punishment should have been applied earlier.

Their case centred on the belief that, had Everton been docked points during the 2021/22 campaign, they would have dropped into the relegation zone instead.

Burnley, who finished four points behind Everton that season, pursued legal action and were ultimately awarded financial compensation after winning their case.

Leeds United seek huge financial payment from Leicester City

It emerged earlier this week that Leeds have opened legal proceedings against Leicester with a statement of claim sent to the Foxes.

Leicester City won promotion to the Premier League in 2023/24, finishing two places above Leeds United. The Whites have launched legal action, arguing they would have secured automatic promotion had Leicester complied with PSR regulations.

Instead, Leeds were forced into the play-offs, where they lost the final to Southampton, delaying their return to the Premier League by another year.

Leicester were later handed a six-point deduction in the Championship last season for breaching spending rules during the 2023/24 campaign.

As per sources speaking exclusively to The Leeds Press, the Whites are claiming financial damages to the tune of ÂŁ35m from Leicester City.

Leeds argue that Leicester’s PSR breaches gave them a financial advantage in the transfer market, helping them win the Championship title and secure automatic promotion.

Citing Burnley’s recent ÂŁ38m compensation win over Everton, the Whites claim they were denied the Premier League’s lucrative revenue after finishing third, seven points behind Leicester, and instead had to settle for Championship income before eventually winning promotion a year later.

The Whites are still facing major legal hurdles

Leeds still face a major legal challenge. To win the case, an independent commission would need to conclude that Leicester’s PSR breaches were, on the balance of probabilities, the reason Leeds missed out on automatic promotion.

That will not be easy given the seven-point gap between the two sides in the final Championship table.

A formal hearing is not expected until the summer of 2027, meaning any verdict or compensation is unlikely before 2028.

It also remains unclear whether 49ers Enterprises will push for the full ÂŁ35m in damages or ultimately look to negotiate a lower, guaranteed settlement.
