Jamie Carragher highlighted a telling difference between Leeds United and Manchester United in their Elland Road meeting, questioning the visitors’ composure and confidence in possession.
The 1-1 draw gave both sides plenty to reflect on, but Carragher’s Monday Night Football analysis offered an interesting perspective on how the teams approached the game. While Manchester United struggled to play their way out of pressure, Leeds showed a willingness to take responsibility on the ball, even when the opposition pressed aggressively.
For Daniel Farke, that contrast will be encouraging. Leeds need to be brave in possession to compete consistently in the Premier League, and Carragher’s comments suggest one player stood out for all the right reasons.

Carragher highlights Man Utd’s struggles against Leeds

“Man United didn’t have or want the ball enough, poor clearance from the goalkeeper, and now you see the lack of quality. No real idea, and a real fear or lack of confidence to get on the ball”, Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, analysing the two teams’ pressing and passing in the first half.
It was a pointed assessment of Manchester United’s inability to build attacks with any real conviction. Carragher felt they lacked the composure and ideas to play through Leeds’ pressure, with their midfielders offering too few options when the ball needed to move quickly.
That made the contrast with Leeds all the more striking. Rather than simply clearing their lines when United pressed, Farke’s players showed more willingness to receive possession and move forward.

Carragher then turned his attention to Leeds and singled out Ethan Ampadu as an example of what United were missing.
“We’ll flip it now and go to Leeds. Manchester United press, somebody wants the ball; Ampadu gets on it, cool and calm, and they get out. We didn’t see that from Man Utd’s midfield players”, he added.
Ampadu’s composure was the key. As United tried to close Leeds down, the midfielder was ready to take the ball under pressure rather than hide from it. His ability to stay calm and help his team escape the press gave Leeds a route out of trouble and let them retain possession.
Carragher’s comparison was particularly damning for United because it was not simply about technical ability. It was also about confidence and a willingness to take responsibility when opponents tried to force mistakes.
For Leeds, a captain comfortable in those situations is a significant asset. Ampadu’s display further underscored his importance to Farke’s side, while Carragher’s analysis highlighted an area United need to address if they want to become more convincing in possession.
