Chelsea’s underhanded tactics during their 1-0 win over Leeds United in the FA Cup final at Wembley annoyed many, but Jason Cundy was left impressed.
Leeds were not good enough on the day, and Ethan Ampadu conceded after the game that his side were nervous in the first half and didn’t play to their potential.
Chelsea earned the win thanks to a strong first-half display, but their second-half approach, marked by time-wasting and the so-called dark arts of the game, drew criticism.
Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez faked an injury to halt Leeds’ momentum after the break. However, Jason Cundy has found no reason to feel bad about what his former side did.
Jason Cundy mocks Leeds United’s complaints at Wembley
Sanchez faked an injury and went down just as Leeds were building some momentum and putting the Blues’ defence under some pressure.
The goalkeeper’s tactics earned the Chelsea players a much-needed breather and gave them time to get fresh instructions from the coaching staff.
Leeds were annoyed, and even journalists called out Chelsea’s cheating tactics. However, Cundy was pleased to see that the Blues found a way to win.
He mocked the complaints from the Leeds fans and congratulated Sanchez for doing what he did at Wembley.
When asked about the Sanchez incident, Cundy said on talkSPORT: “Good and could not care less.
“I have been saying for quite a while, I want to be more like Arsenal, I want shithousery in our game, I want some maturity, and I want to show in-game management.
“The Leeds fans near me were going absolutely ballistic, they were going crazy and throwing all sorts of hand signals at me.
“The truth is, it’s annoying when it’s happening to your team, and you want your team to do it when you are leading.
“Something needs to be done about it, but well done, Sanchez, for going down.”
Leeds were not good enough on the day
Chelsea’s tactics in the second half were disgraceful, and the referees should have been more alert to ensure that Sanchez didn’t disrupt the flow of the game.
However, Leeds were not good enough and had themselves to blame for missing a couple of fantastic opportunities during the game.
Brenden Aaronson could not finish early in the game when he was through on goal, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin could have done a lot more to make Sanchez work with a header after the break.
Sanchez faking an injury was a problem, but Leeds didn’t play well enough to beat a poor Chelsea side at Wembley on Sunday.
