Leeds United are looking to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League in the remaining eleven games of the season and they are being backed to get the job done. However, the summer transfer window is going to be huge for the Whites if they get promoted. There is intrigue about the kind of players Leeds would be looking to bring in and some ideas are developing about the areas of the squad they would be strengthening. However, the club also have decisions to make over the future of several of their players who have brought them to the cusp of promotion. And one of those stars who might not be part of their Premier League journey is Junior Firpo.
Firpo has been a terrific player for Leeds this season, scoring three goals and providing eight assists in 25 matches in all competitions for the Yorkshire giants.
Only Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has more assists than the Leeds United left-back across the top four divisions of English football in 2025.
However, his contract is set to expire at the end of the season and there is little indication that he could be offered a new contract to continue at Elland Road.
Firpo is open to staying at Leeds if they get promoted but his poor performances in the top flight last time around are set to play a key role in the club’s decision.
And there are signs that Leeds are unlikely to offer him a new contract as the club are already weighing up tabling a bid for a new left-back identified by their recruitment team.
Leeds United have set their sights on a left-back who has impressed in the Champions League this season
Spanish left-back Hugo Bueno is claimed to have emerged as a top target for Leeds ahead of the next summer transfer window as part of their plans.
The 22-year-old has been on Wolves’ books since 2019 and owing to Ryan Ait-Nouri’s form, he joined Dutch giants Feyenoord on loan last summer.
The young left-back has impressed for the Rotterdam club, registering four assists in 23 appearances across all competitions this season, including featuring eight times in the Champions League.
His performances have caught the eye of Leeds who are actively looking to sign a new left-back to replace Junior Firpo in the team this summer.
According to TEAMTalk, the Yorkshire giants are seriously considering making a bid for the left-back when the transfer window rolls out in the next few months.
He still has more than three years left on his contract at Wolves and the Premier League club are likely to demand a steep fee for a player who has Champions League pedigree.
Leeds are also expected to face Premier League competition for his signature as even Nottingham Forest are claimed to be interested in Buengo and they could possibly offer him European football next season.
It would be a massive coup if Leeds manage to sign him
Firpo’s Premier League performances are likely to go against him when Leeds sit down to consider offering him a new contract at the end of the season.
It looks almost certain that they will bring in a new left-back and Leeds seem to have set their sights on Bueno who has impressed in European football this season.
The 22-year-old has top-flight experience and his performances in the Champions League are likely to carry more weight than what he did in the Eredivisie this season.
Can you name these 10 Leeds United players from the 2000s?
He appears to be a modern left-back who can bomb forward, which should seamlessly work with the way Daniel Farke operates his full-backs.
Wolves could still want to hold on to him if Ait-Nouri moves on and interest from Forest is another complication for Leeds in their pursuit of Bueno.
However, if Leeds manage to get their hands on the 22-year-old it could be considered as a serious coup given the level of interest he is attracting ahead of the summer.
