Leeds United let go of a lot of first team players this summer due to multiple reasons. The club aimed to improve the quality in the squad, and that meant some players had to leave.
Leeds terminated Max Wober’s contract, allowing him to leave on a free transfer. Jack Harrison was also sold to the MLS, which meant two of the club’s top earners are off the wage bill.
Some players also had to leave to get a chance at first team football elsewhere.
This is why Lucas Perri joined Torino on loan, with the club prioritizing a move for James Trafford.
And as revealed by Daniel Farke after the transfer deadline, some players were allowed to leave because they could not be promised first team football.

Sebastiaan Bornauw was largely a rotation option last season. He joined the club as a backup for the first choice defenders, and only got opportunities in the first team when players got injured.
So this summer, he asked Farke to let him leave Leeds United when Hamburg came calling.
Tuesday’s print edition of BILD details the defender’s words when he described how he joined the German club this summer.
“I fought hard at Leeds United to come to Hamburg. I really wanted to play for HSV. There’s an abundance of tradition here, and I like that,” he said.
Bornauw also spoke about life back in Germany where he played with VFL Wolfsburg.
“When I played in Wolfsburg, there wasn’t that much to do there. And Hamburg wasn’t that far away. So, I know the city quite well, and that makes it easier to settle in here,”

Sebastiaan Bornauw wanted to leave this summer, and when HSV came there was no reason for him to stay. He was rarely used last year, and James Justin was even played as a centre back ahead of him.
Leeds also managed to complete the signing of two top players in his position.
Tarik Muharemovic has hit the ground running and is proving why he was worth the £34 million outlay in the summer.
Nico Elvedi has proven to be a solid addition to the squad; Farke has been a big fan of his and the Swiss international has played very well.
