Around seven years ago, Marcelo Bielsa was in charge of Leeds United. The Argentine’s time at the club is fondly remembered for his great football style and connection to the fans.
Before the team eventually reached the Premier League in 2020, they reached the play-off finals in 2019. They failed to finish in the automatic promotion places and had to go through the play-offs.
They ended up facing Frank Lampard and his Derby County side. Before the two legs, it emerged that some members of Bielsa’s technical staff were spying on the opponents before the games.
The EFL fined Leeds United £200,000, which was paid by the Argentine coach. It was news that dominated the headlines for the duration of the two-legged tie. Eventually Derby County won, and reached the play-off final, but lost to Aston Villa.
‘Spygate’ scandal rocks Leeds United transfer hopes
And years later, a similar incident has occurred in the Championship. Middlesbrough accused Southampton of sending a staff member to spy on their training session during the play-offs.
The issue has been investigated and Southampton have been charged for the incident. However, Middlesbrough want the Saints thrown out of the play-offs. A final ruling on this could be given this week.
The EFL confirmed that a disciplinary hearing will be held over the issue, with Southampton set to face Hull City in the play-off final.
This latest ‘Spygate’ issue is set to affect Leeds United’s transfer plans going forward. According to reports, the Whites are after Hayden Hackney, who Middlesbrough value at £20million.
If Southampton are thrown out of the play-offs, Middlesbrough will take their place in the final. And if Boro manage to reach the Premier League, it will complicate things around Hayden Hackney.
The club could choose to keep him if they make the top flight, or increase his price tag if talks are advanced.

The 49ers have the right profile in mind with Hayden Hackney
Daniel Farke has been pursuing a playmaker for his team over the last few years. He has missed out on many targets, and ended up having to use Brenden Aaronson last season.
This year, his system did not require a number 10 or an orthodox attacking midfielder. Rather the team operated using forwards either side of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Hayden Hackney has been key for Middlesbrough this season, with six goals and seven assists this season. His all round game is great, and he possesses a lot of ability on the ball.
If Leeds can add him to their midfield this summer, he would be a huge addition to Daniel Farke’s side.
