Leeds United’s ‘expensive’ £35m striker pursuit under threat from Nottingham Forest

Last summer, Leeds United fans were disappointed when the club failed to sign a marquee name before deadline day. Before that, the team had recruited well in the summer.

The Whites ended up signing 10 players ahead of their return to the Premier League.

When the signing of Dominic Calvert-Lewin was announced, not many agreed with the move. His injury history at Everton and his reported wages were the concern of many involved.

The club also added Noah Okafor from AC Milan and Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer – two players fans did not expect much from.

However, the trio ended up being the top goalscorers in the team this past season. Calvert-Lewin scored 15 goals, while Okafor and Nmecha combined for 15 goals.

Leeds United transfer target eyed by Nottingham Forest

During the campaign, there were points where Leeds United lacked a clinical edge to finish off games. Dominic Calvert-Lewin also went from a drought around January which raised concerns.

Reports emerged that the 49ers were keen on adding another striker heading into next season.

Lois Openda was a name that was heavily linked with a move to Elland Road. Per multiple reports, the Belgian striker is set to leave Juventus ahead of next season.

This opens the door for Leeds, but Nottingham Forest are also said to be in the race for the 26-year old according to Tutto Juve.

Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe has already said that the club is ready to spend this summer. The Whites are said to be looking at signing four or five players ahead of next season.

49ers need to avoid this deal

Everything that has reported so far makes this deal a very bad one for Leeds United. According to the report from Tutto Juve, the Italian side are looking to recoup most of the £35 million they spent to sign him.

On the pitch, Openda has been very poor this season – he managed just two goals in 37 games in all competitions. The Serie A side looking to offload him is not good news for any suitors.

Per the report, Juventus will push for a permanent exit, or at worst a loan with an obligation or option to buy.

The details also reveal that even though clubs like Nottingham Forest and Monaco are interested, Openda’s wages are a huge stumbling block. And that is not a good thing for Leeds, who are very careful about their finances.
