The Leeds United wonderkid who could end Brenden Aaronson’s Elland Road career

Leeds United have plenty of attacking options for Daniel Farke to work with, but one player is still a long way from the first team and could become an interesting name at Elland Road in the years ahead.

Callum Mills is not a name most Leeds fans will know yet. That could change pretty quickly if the academy midfielder continues developing at his current rate.

The teenager has already stepped up to Under-21 football and signed his first professional contract with the club this summer. He made 37 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring five times, while also getting opportunities to test himself against senior opposition.

Mills can operate in midfield or out wide, and his attacking instincts are part of what makes him an intriguing prospect.

He is nowhere near the stage where anyone should be talking about him challenging for a Premier League starting place. But Leeds have invested in his development, and his next challenge is to show that he can turn promising performances against academy opposition into something more tangible against senior players.

If he does, one established Leeds attacker’s position could eventually become particularly interesting.

Why Aaronson gives Mills an opening

Brenden Aaronson has just signed a new contract that keeps him at Leeds until 2029, so there is no suggestion the club are looking to move him on.

Farke clearly still sees a role for him.

The American’s energy, pressing and movement are useful weapons, and his ability to play in several attacking positions makes him a handy option for the manager.

But there is no getting away from the biggest weakness in his game: Aaronson doesn’t produce enough in the final third.

He has played in all five of Leeds’ Premier League matches this season, starting two, but still hasn’t scored or assisted.

That follows a 2025/26 campaign in which he managed four goals and five assists in 37 league appearances.

Those numbers aren’t disastrous, but they aren’t particularly impressive for an attacking player either.

That’s where someone like Mills could eventually become relevant.

If the academy prospect develops into a player capable of consistently creating chances, scoring goals and making things happen around the box, then his pathway into the first team becomes much easier to imagine.

Mills does not have to become Aaronson’s direct replacement. In fact, their games are not identical.

The point is that Farke will ultimately have to pick the players who give Leeds the most in the attacking third.

Mills has plenty of work to do

There is absolutely no need to rush Mills.

He is still a developing player, and Leeds will want to make sure he gets the right experience before throwing him into Premier League football.

His progress with the Under-21s will be important, particularly when he comes up against older, stronger players. But he has already shown enough to make him worth keeping an eye on.

His professional contract signals that Leeds see a future for him at the club, and his versatility gives him another advantage. He does not need to be pigeonholed into one position as he develops.

The next stage is simply about production. Can Mills keep scoring? Can he create consistently? Can he handle senior football when the intensity and physicality increase?

If the answer to those questions eventually becomes yes, Leeds could have another academy graduate knocking on the first-team door.

And that could create an interesting situation for Aaronson.

For now, the American is comfortably ahead. Mills has not even played a Premier League minute and has much to learn. But Aaronson’s lack of end product raises at least one question about his long-term role.

If Mills can develop that missing final-third quality, he may eventually give Farke something Aaronson has struggled to provide consistently.

That is still a long way down the road.

But Leeds fans might want to remember the name, Callum Mills.
