Patrick Bamford may have felt hard done by when Leeds United decided to pay up his contract and push him out of the club as a free agent.

The former Leeds striker, who joined Sheffield United in November, has made no bones about the fact that the whole situation could have been handled better, and his departure was more acrimonious than it should have been.

However, Daniel Farke and Leeds had little choice towards the end of the transfer window when Bamford found no takers and was training with the Under-21s as he had no future in the first team.

The Leeds boss and the rest of the hierarchy are set to face the same situation this summer, and their decision-making must be as clear-headed as it was when it came to Bamford.

Max Wober should be allowed to leave as a free agent

Leeds loaned out Max Wober to Werder Bremen last summer with an option to buy. However, the defender had a torrid time with injuries and played little to no football.

The German club have no reason to take up the option to sign the defender on a permanent deal. Wober will inevitably return to Leeds during pre-season.

However, he has no future at Elland Road, and Daniel Farke would prefer to see his future decided before pre-season begins this summer.

But his injury record makes it almost certain that Leeds will find it hard to find buyers for the Austrian centre-back in the upcoming transfer window.

It is hard to see how a club agree to pay a fee for a centre-back who played very little football and struggled with injuries last season.

Leeds have on choice but to pay up his contract and let him leave on a free transfer in the upcoming window.

The Whites would have to take a financial hit

Max Wober has a year left on his contract, and Leeds would love to get some fee from his departure in the upcoming transfer window.

However, convincing a club to pay a fee plus his wages after a season where he struggled with injuries would be hard.

After the way last season unfolded, it is difficult to see many clubs willing to take a financial risk on Wober this summer, leaving Leeds with very few realistic options.

They should seriously consider terminating his contract and allowing him to leave on a free transfer, even if it means accepting a short-term financial setback.

Daniel Farke showed very little faith in him in the Championship, and there is no reason to suggest that his mind has changed on Wober in the last year.

Leeds and Wober need to part ways this summer, and there is only one way it seems plausible.
